Via and the City of Newton Launch Microtransit Network Aimed to Support Local Seniors
The new on-demand service “NewMo” is tailored exclusively to Newton’s senior population, increasing both mobility and wellness
June 13, 2019 (Newton, MA) — Via, the world’s leading provider and developer of on-demand public mobility solutions, today announced a new microtransit deployment in partnership with the City of Newton called Newton in Motion, or NewMo. The new on-demand shared transit system is available to seniors living in Newton, increasing their mobility within the city and select destinations in the surrounding region.
NewMo provides any resident over the age of 60 with an efficient, reliable, and affordable way to travel within the city of Newton, as well as a number of medical facilities outside of the city’s boundaries. The on-demand service replaces an outdated taxi voucher system which required passengers to make reservations at least 72 hours in advance.
“We’re delighted to be working with the City of Newton to provide an affordable, convenient, and comfortable transportation solution for seniors,” said Daniel Ramot, co-founder and CEO of Via. “We have increasingly seen cities and towns ask how they can provide their residents with public transportation that radically improves the customer experience, and yet still achieves the same environmental and congestion-reducing benefits of mass transit solutions. Via’s sophisticated on-demand transit technology is that solution, and we are excited for NewMo to improve mobility for seniors in the community.”
Using the Via app, riders will be able to hail a vehicle directly from their smartphone. Via’s advanced algorithms will enable multiple riders to seamlessly share the vehicle. The powerful technology will direct passengers to a nearby virtual bus stop within a short walking distance for pick up and drop off, allowing for quick and efficient shared trips without lengthy detours, or inconvenient fixed routes and schedules.
“I want seniors to be able to stay in Newton and thrive. Reliable, safe, affordable transportation is a key to giving people options for staying involved in their community as they phase out driving. This is a ground-breaking program that I really think can be a game-changer,” said Mayor Ruthanne Fuller.
Seniors can use the service by downloading the Via smartphone app, available on iOS and Android, or by calling (617-655-8019). Users can book rides Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays 9:00 a.m. to noon, costing as little as 50 cents to $5. In partnership with Avis, the new service will feature a fleet of Mercedes Metris vans, as well as wheelchair accessible vehicles.
Via is a leading provider and developer of on-demand public mobility solutions, working with cities and transportation agencies around the world to connect more people to transit. Cooee Busways is among numerous other deployments powered by Via around the globe that make it easier for commuters who do not own a car, prefer not to drive and park, or live within a long distance of a transit hub.
Via has been tapped by cities and transportation players around the world to help re-engineer public transit from a regulated system of rigid routes and schedules to a fully dynamic, on-demand network. Via now has more than 70 launched and pending deployments in more than 15 countries. To learn more about Via, visit www.platform.ridewithvia.com.

Mercedes-Benz Vans: First independent Mercedes PRO sales outlet in Manhattan
14.
June 2019
Stuttgart
Customers can now find an independent sales outlet for Mercedes PRO, the digital B2B fleet solution, at the Mercedes-Benz dealership in Manhattan (New York, USA). Based on the shop-in-shop principle, this is the first of its kind worldwide. Using a real Sprinter cockpit, Van customers can call up vehicle data, run analyses and make service appointments, for example. Thus all of the 18 Mercedes PRO connect services available at present can be experienced hands-on.
Available in 19 European markets, Mercedes PRO has been available in the USA since the beginning of 2019. “It was a conscious decision to open our first over-the-counter sales outlet in Manhattan. Many digital service offerings are at home in the USA, so we are just bringing together what belongs together. As a digital ecosystem, Mercedes PRO optimises the communication between fleet managers, vehicles and drivers. Orders can be managed online and vehicle information accessed via the system”, explains Bjoern Sack, Head of Connectivity and Digital Services.
Mercedes PRO is the new digital service brand from Mercedes-Benz Vans. The Van sector groups together all current and future business service offers on a digital platform. In addition to a consultation at a dealership, a product advisor is available free of charge at www.mercedes.pro to help Mercedes-Benz Vans commercial customers select the digital services best-suited to their fleet and business. For this, the following parameters in particular are taken into account: the business sector, fleet size, annual mileage and the dynamics of the route planning.

Byton M-Byte electric SUV: More interior photos, US timeline confirmed
While the upstart electric vehicle maker Byton hasn’t yet said much about how its $45,000 M-Byte electric SUV will be sold or serviced in the U.S. it’s confirmed that this vehicle, due next summer, will come with a standout feature atop its dash: a wider screen than you might have in your living room.
The huge 48-inch Shared Experience Display spans the width of its M-Byte’s dashboard and incorporates gesture controls plus individual zones for the driver and passenger, a companion touchscreen tablet built into the steering wheel, and facial recognition and directional microphones to help cater functions to each occupant.
Although that might sound more like the pipe-dream domain of concept cars, the interface will be included even in the base M-Byte costing around $45k. And last week, with the official opening of its Shanghai Design Studio, the company released a few more up-close images that confirm a series of standout details making it into the production version.
Byton concept, 2018 Consumer Electronics Show
Some of the pragmatic concessions—like climate control vents and some hard buttons―that Byton added to its prototype version of the M-Byte for its most recent showing, this January, carry through to the production version.
Byton notes that the front seats, which can rotate inward up to 12 degrees, have made it from the M-Byte Concept all the way through to the production model—although we would assume the rotation is for when you’re parked. In all, Byton claims that 90 percent of the concept car’s design was retained.
The pictures confirm that although climate controls are in a smaller screen at the front of the center console, physical buttons for the front and rear defroster/defogger are higher up in the middle of the dash, as are the shift buttons.
Headquarters of Byton electric-car company, Santa Clara, California
Byton has its headquarters in Nanjing, China, with offices in Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong. It retains an R&D center in Silicon Valley and its primary design and concept center in Munich, Germany.
When the Nanjing, China–built M-Byte shows up in the U.S., in mid-2020, according to the company, with a sales-and-service plan yet unannounced, it could slot into a compelling niche, costing tens of thousands less than alternatives from Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and Jaguar but a whole size larger than the Tesla Model Y.
Byton M-Byte concept
Byton told Green Car Reports last week that “the current tariff situation has not impacted Byton’s production and delivery timeline.” In addition to the North American rollout in 2020, it plans to sell the M-Byte in China starting late this year and in Europe in late 2020, and a full reveal is likely this fall.

Deliveries are set to commence in September: The new CLA Shooting Brake can now be ordered

June 2019
Stuttgart
Combined fuel consumption: 5.8‑5.5 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 132-125 g/km*Stuttgart. With its proportions the new Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake sparks emotions: a long bonnet, compact greenhouse with coupé-like windowlines, muscular shoulders over the rear wheel arch and a supplely crouched rear, which clearly shows its sports car genes. Prices begin at 32,213.30 euros[1] for the CLA 180 rated at 100 kW (136 hp), 200 Nm and with a six-speed manual transmission (combined fuel consumption: 5.8‑5.5 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 132-125 g/km)[2]. Deliveries will commence in September 2019.
Attractive, intelligent – and practical: the new Mercedes-Benz CLA will also be available as a Shooting Brake from September. The design shows a sense of elegant athleticism: from the striking “shark nose” at the front and the uncluttered sides with accented surfaces, through to the gently muscular rear end. The latter on the CLA Shooting Brake ensures a decisive addition in terms of functionality.
The designer piece provides space for spontaneity, be it on an extended shopping spree or for sports and outdoor activities. At 871 millimetres, the boot opening is significantly wider than in the previous model (635 mm). In addition, the tailgate can also be opened contactlessly thanks to EASY-PACK and HANDS-FREE ACCESS (both part of the KEYLESS-GO Convenience package for 892.50 euros).

Individualisation of the CLA Shooting Brake begins with the Progressive design and equipment line (1755.25 euros). This includes 18-inch light-alloy wheels, a leather-finished multifunction sports steering wheel and comfort seats plus a 40:20:40 split-folding rear seat backrest. Externally the design and equipment line is also distinguishable by the visible exhaust tailpipe trim elements and the discreet chrome trim strip on the front and rear aprons.
A sporty look inside and out comes courtesy of the AMG Line (3510.50 euros) with 18-inch AMG light-alloy wheels, AMG front apron, AMG rear apron and AMG side sill panels, sports seats, multifunction sports steering wheel in nappa leather and light longitundinal-grain aluminium trim elements. The AMG Line also has the lowered comfort suspension and Direct Steer with a variable steering ratio.
Especially exclusive: the Edition 1
In its first year, all the engine variants of the new CLA Shooting Brake will also be available as Edition 1 versions. This limited edition is based on the AMG line. Numerous visual highlights on both the exterior and interior emphasise its exclusivity. The Edition 1 costs 6902 euros more than the base version. It includes LED High Performance headlamps, AMG light-alloy wheels measuring 19 inches in diameter and with an orange-painted rim flange. Also included is the Night package with a host of high-gloss black-painted trim elements, underscored in the Edition 1 variant with orange-coloured highlights.
In the interior the Edition 1 has orange-coloured contrasting topstitching on the dashboard, sports seats, armrests, door panel beltlines and floor matsFitted as standard are sports seats, ambient lighting with 64 colours plus trim elements with “Edition 1” lettering.
All-round support: three driving assistance systems in the CLA Shooting Brake
The new CLA Shooting Brake features modern driving assistance systems with cooperative driver support. For example, standard equipment includes Active Lane Keeping Assist and Active Braking Assist.
The Driving Assistance package (1796.90 euros) is comprehensive and has coordinated functions. It includes the following systems: Active Distance Control DISTRONIC; route-based speed adjustment; Active Steering Assist; Active Speed Limit Assist; Active Braking Assist with Cross-Traffic Function; Evasive Steering Assist; Active Lane Changing Assist; Active Emergency Stop Assist; Active Blind Spot Assist; PRE-SAFE® PLUS.
For the first time, the CLA Shooting Brake is able to drive semi-autonomously in certain driving situations. Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC (714 euros) and Active Steering Assist (part of the Driving Assistance package) support the driver even more comfortably in maintaining the distance to other vehicles and in steering; the speed can now also be automatically adjusted for corners, junctions or roundabouts.
Apart from the PRE-SAFE® functions included in the Driving Assistance package, the PRE-SAFE® System (392.70 euros) is also available separately. The PRE‑SAFE® System uses the time before an impending accident and can initiate a number of measures to reduce the burden that occurs during an accident. These also include the innovative PRE-SAFE® Sound system. This prepares the human hearing for the expected noise of an impact when there is a risk of a collision and can thus reduce noise strain caused by an accident.
