2022 Mercedes-Benz GLC to Be Made in Sindelfingen

It was just earlier this year that the facelift for the GLC was unveiled, but Mercedes-Benz is already thinking about the second generation of the nameplate, and where else to produce it.
19 photosWith sales of SUV models on the rise across the industry, Mercedes is considering adding a new facility to the roster of production hubs for the GLC. In an announcement made this week, the carmaker said the Sindelfingen facility, the birthplace of the AMG GT cars, among many others, will be in charge of making the new generation GLC as well.
“With production of the GLC at the Mercedes-Benz Sindelfingen plant we are putting our global production network on an even more flexible and efficient footing,” said in a statement Markus Schäfer, Mercedes-Benz executive in charge with production.
“Alongside premium and luxury class vehicles the plant is now receiving a further volume model in the much-sought-after SUV segment.”
Currently, the GLC is being assembled at several locations across the globe. In Germany, the present-day SUV comes together at the Bremen plant. Elsewhere in Europe, the car rolls-off assembly lines operated by Valmet Automotive in Uusikaupunki, Finland, while the Chinese variant is sourced from Beijing, with the help of Beijing Benz Automotive Corporation (BBAC) joint venture.
Mercedes did not say whether the decision to start production in Sindelfingen will affect the other manufacturing sites.
As said, the current version of the GLC has barely made it out into the open. For Mercedes, the GLC in regular and coupe variants is just one of seven SUV it currently sells, alongside the GLA, GLE, GLE Coupé, GLS, and G-Class.
As is the case with most other global players in the industry, Mercedes-Benz is also enjoying the golden years of the SUV body style. Since the first such car was introduced by the Germans, more than five million were sold. 1.5 million of them were GLC and int predecessor, GLK models.

Report: Battery shortages lead to Audi E-tron production delays

2019 Audi e-tron first drive – Abu Dhabi UAE, December 2018
Building electric cars is harder than it looks.

According to a report last week in the Brussels Times, Audi is delaying the production of its planned E-tron Sportback and slowing production of its E-tron SUV following battery shortages from supplier LG Chem.

The factory that builds the e-tron has cut back from eight hours of production a day to six, and is reported to be planning to cut back from running five days a week to four, leading to a day of unemployment for workers there. The moves would cut production of the long-awaited electric car by 10,000 cars annually, from more than 55,000 to just over 45,000 in 2019, according to the Brussels Times. In the report, Audi declined to comment on the delay.

Many automakers ramping up production of plug-in hybrids and electric cars depend on LG Chem for cells, including Hyundai, Volkswagen, General Motors, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW. LG's dominance in supplying batteries to electric cars gives it power to control prices.

A report last year by Germany's Bild am Sonntag newspaper suggested that LG Chem raised prices on its batteries for the Audi E-tron by 10 percent, leading to the production shortage.

Waiting lists for the car in Europe have reportedly expanded from 4-5 months to 6-7 months, as demand has also increased by 15 percent. Audi's Belgian spokeswoman Sofie Luyckx told the Brussels Times, that is “not an exceptional waiting time for an all-new Audi.”

At the New York auto show last week, Audi E-tron product manager Matt Mostafaei said that the company has U.S. orders for the car, which is expected to go on sale here in May, but would not specify how many.

The delays could also be impacted by a shortage of the car's electric motors following a strike at the Hungarian factory that produces the motors.

CHECK OUT: Audi details battery for 2019 e-tron electric SUV

The reports say the introduction of the E-tron Sportback, a smaller hatchback version of the E-tron SUV, has also been delayed from late this year to 2020.

Audi is planning a whole line of electric E-tron models, including the SUV, the Sportback, the e-tron GT sports sedan, a new smaller Q4 E-tron SUV, and reportedly a new E-tron GTR supercar to replace its R8 flagship, according to a new report in British auto journal Car.

If it's going to fulfill all those dreams, the company will need to secure a large and reliable source of batteries and, if these hiccups are any indication, it still might not have that.

Mercedes-Benz Cars at the 2019 New York International Auto Show: Stunning appearance with three world premieres

17.

April 2019

New York

New York. Following the successful “eve” event the inventor of the car presented three further world premieres on the first press day of the NYIAS 2019: on display for the first time in the Big Apple were the new Mercedes-Benz GLS, the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupé and the EQC Edition 1886 (combined electric energy consumption: 20.8 – 19.7 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 0 g/km)[i].
The world's public was given its first glimpse of the new GLS – the largest and most luxurious SUV from Mercedes-Benz. The S-Class of SUVs offers more of everything: more space, more comfort, more luxury. The effortlessly superior presence of its exterior is down to its imposing dimensions which have increased yet further. The E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL active suspension on 48-volt basis offers outstanding suspension comfort, agile handling and a high degree of off-road capability. The GLS has the latest generation of Mercedes-Benz driving assistance systems giving cooperative support to drivers. The new 4MATIC ensures great agility on the road and strong performance off the beaten track. The new GLS has impressive aerodynamics in its segment, with a cd figure of 0.32.
“The new GLS offers outstanding comfort and high performance both on the road and in off-road terrain. And alongside the increased amount of space it also has our intuitive infotainment system MBUX”, says Britta Seeger, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, responsible for Mercedes-Benz Cars Sales. “In 2018 more than 820,000 units of the SUVs were sold, making them our strongest segment worldwide. A major proportion was sold in the USA – reaching a new record level with over 165,000 units sold in 2018. Due to the significance of this market our focus continues to be on building the best SUVs – be they electric, as a hybrid or with conventional engines.”
Expressive sports coupé with innovative technology
The revised Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupé celebrated its debut. The next generation of the successful model skilfully and intricately combines the sportiness of a coupé with the functionality of an SUV. The result is a vehicle for individualists who attach maximum importance to extraordinary looks, the greatest possible freedom and pioneering technology. Innovative technologies, intelligent driving assistance systems and a new engine generation make the coupé a paragon of sportiness, safety and efficiency. It is characterised by its dynamic appearance and elegant lines. Its coupé character shines through in the squat silhouette with the dropping roof line and rounded rear window.
“The GLC Coupé blends the performance of an SUV, the emotive appeal of a coupé and the unmistakeable Mercedes-Benz style in an intelligent overall package”, says Dietmar Exler, President & CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA.
Edition model with extensive optional extras
A further highlight at this year's New York International Auto Show was the world premiere of the Mercedes-Benz EQC Edition 1886. The name recalls the invention of the first car and underlines the pioneering spirit of the brand with the star. The Edition 1886 of the battery-electric crossover SUV demonstrates that the idea of mobility of the future extends way beyond vehicles themselves. This is why it combines extensive optional extras such as exclusive design elements with customer-friendly services connected with all aspects of electric mobility.
“The EQC is the pioneer of our future Mercedes-Benz EQ portfolio”, said Britta Seeger. “The EQC Edition 1886 not only stands for progressive design, exciting driving dynamics and a range more than suitable to daily needs, it also stands for intelligent additional services that anticipate and fulfil the driver's needs. The clear objective here is long-term carefree use of the vehicle.”
