German auto giants BMW and Daimler team up to develop self-driving technologies

BMW Group/Daimler AG
The two companies will work together on a variety of autonomous technologies.

Daimler and the BMW Group are to work together on automated driving technologies.
In an announcement on Thursday, the auto giants said their initial focus would be on the development of “next-generation technologies” for automated driving on highways, driver assistance systems and parking features.
BMW and Daimler said that their collaboration would focus on Levels 3 and 4 of SAE International's levels of driving automation. Five “levels” of driving automation have been defined by SAE International, a global association of over 128,000 engineers.
At Level 5, automated driving features can drive a vehicle under all conditions. At Levels 3 and 4, automated driving features allow technology to drive a vehicle under certain, limited conditions.
The two companies said they viewed their partnership as being a “long-term, strategic cooperation”, adding that they were aiming to make “next-level technologies widely available” by the middle of the 2020s.
Thursday's announcement comes a week after BMW and Daimler announced anew one billion euro mobility partnership.
Earlier this week, the CEO of Arm Holdings told CNBC that it would be “a while” before self-driving cars become mainstream.
“It is a phenomenally hard problem to anticipate what a car could do under absolutely any set of circumstances,” Simon Segars, who was speaking with CNBC's Karen Tso at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, said earlier this week.

“I think you're going to start to see early services, in quite a constrained way, quite soon over the next couple of years,” he added, explaining that there was “some way to come” before the technology was “completely mainstream.”

Mercedes-Benz at the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show

04.

March 2019

Stuttgart/Geneva

Combined fuel consumption: 12.5 – 6.2 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 284 – 142 g/km*Stuttgart/Geneva. An exclusive look at the world premieres, a relaxed atmosphere and plenty of room to chat: Ahead of the press days at the Geneva International Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz tells an invited audience of media representatives about the world premieres scheduled for one of the industry’s most important shows. Focal points included the presentation of the facelifted GLC, the AMG GLE 53 4MATIC+ (fuel consumption combined: 9.3 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 212 g/km)1 and the AMG GT R Roadster (fuel consumption combined: 12.5 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 284 g/km)2.
“Meet Mercedes” offers more than just a product presentation. The tried-and-tested format buzzes with discourse among journalists, engineers, product managers and brand representatives from Mercedes-Benz Cars. The subject matter provided by a tour of the display and subsequent workshops delivered an overview of current Daimler activities. The core information came from Britta Seeger, Member of the Board of Management Mercedes-Benz Cars Marketing & Sales, and Ola Källenius, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development, with their spontaneously delivered presentations and commentary on the new vehicles, and insights into product and brand philosophy. “Mercedes-Benz is the most valuable premium car brand. A major factor in that success is we build cars that our customers love,” said Britta Seeger, referring to the sheer breadth of the vehicle presentations. Ola Källenius turned his attention to the electrification strategy for the next few years: “We will offer several electrified solutions for all mobility demands, and we plan to offer more than 10 purely electric models by 2025.”
The main course: three special-edition models
The main course served on the outside exhibition area in Geneva was three special-edition models from Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-AMG, on show for the first time: the SLC 300 (fuel consumption combined: 7.0 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 161 g/km)1 and the AMG S 65 (fuel consumption combined: 14.2 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 325 g/km)1, each as a Final Edition, as well as the SL 500 Grand Edition (fuel consumption combined: 9.8 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 223 g/km)1.
Mercedes-Benz GLC: excelling on and off the road
In “HEAD – Genève” everything was about the world premieres of the GLC and AMG GLE 53 4MATIC+ as well as the new AMG GT Roadster. Like its predecessor, the updated Mercedes-Benz GLC pairs excellent driving characteristics both on and off the road with spaciousness, functionality and comfort. With its broad stance and sporty appearance, the new operating concept including MBUX and gesture control, innovative driver assistance systems and a redeveloped engine range, the new GLC offers the very best of Mercedes-Benz.
Two athletes from Affalterbach
The Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 4MATIC+ promises not only more performance than its predecessor, but also a noticeably more agile and precise driving experience both on- and off-road, thanks not least to its AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel drive. The Mercedes-AMG GT R Roadster pairs ultimate performance with the freedom of open-top driving – and is the crowning glory of the open sports car model line-up. It is as much at home on winding racetracks as it is on the upscale boulevards and stunning coast roads of the world. The 4.0-litre V8 biturbo from AMG with 430 kW (585 hp) and maximum torque of 700 Nm underscores its powerful appearance.
Show cars point the way forward
Two further world premieres in Geneva provide a glimpse of the future: The Formula E show car represents the entry of the Mercedes-Benz EQ Formula E team into the ABB FIA Formula E Championship in the 2019/2020 season. With the smart forease+, the smart brand is presenting not only a groundbreaking design show car, but is also confirming its position as a pioneer of comprehensive mobility offerings with the latest developments in its “ready to” services. With more than eight all-new digital services such as private carsharing and package delivery direct to the vehicle as well as significantly expanded functionality, smart makes urban life more convenient for its customers and eases entry into electric mobility. Plus, the new user interface also makes it all even simpler to operate.

Mercedes-Benz is formally entering Formula E electric-car racing for the upcoming 2019-2020 season, and for the upcoming Geneva Motor Show it has revealed what it terms a “teaser” version of the racing car, called the EQ Silver Arrow 01.

Mercedes says that it “provides an idea of the team’s Formula E campaign to come.” The vehicle won’t be shown in its final livery, according to a release “at a later stage ahead of the season opener.”

“The blue touches and the subtle contrast between matte and gloss in conjunction with the star motif at the rear of the vehicle convey the concept of progressive luxury in electric motorsport,” said chief design officer Gordon Wagener of this version, in a company press release, with notes that the horizontal blue line symbolizes Mercedes’ electrification-focused EQ brand and is in contrast to the green hue of its Formula 1 car, the Mercedes-AMG F1 W10 EQ Power+.

“Formula E is going to be a completely new playing field for us,” said Toto Wolff, the head of Mercedes-Benz Motorsport. “But we are looking forward to the challenge of demonstrating the performance of our intelligent battery-electric drives in motorsport and of giving a positive boost to the EQ brand.”

The upcoming 2019-2020 racing season will be the first one in which Mercedes will compete in both Formula 1 and Formula E.

Season 6 of Formula E, slated to start in December 2019, will also include Porsche for the first time. With the current Season 5, BMW entered as a manufacturer team, and Nissan entered Formula E, replacing its Renault affiliate.

Mercedes lists the top speed of its car as 174 mph, with an acceleration time of 0-60 mph in about 2.7 seconds.

The current season is the first with an all-new Gen2 racing car, with “halo” cockpit protection for the driver, higher power and top speeds, and no full-car swaps mid-race. At 52-kwh and 849 pounds, the battery that needs to power all Formula E cars for the entire 45-minute races is a product of McLaren Applied Technologies and Lucid Motors (Atieva), with Sony cells.

Three of 13 Season 5 races have already been held, with the next one on March 10 in Hong Kong and the season ending with two Brooklyn street circuit races on July 13-14, 2019.

CREWE, 1-Feb-2019 — /EuropaWire/ — In 2019, Bentley enters its Centenary year. The 10th of July 2019 marks Bentley’s 100th year and this extraordinary milestone – reached by only a special few companies – will be a cause for celebration of the company’s history, its global success today and its exciting future. For the occasion Bentley is organising a series of classic and heritage events through out the year to mark its 100th anniversary. The year begins with a VIP event: the oldest remaining and first racing model – EXP 2 – will be shown at Retromobile, between 6-10 February at Salon des Expositions, Porte de Versailles.

Mercedes-Benz Vans: The new V-Class – now available to order

04.

March 2019

Stuttgart/Geneva

Stuttgart/Geneva – The new Mercedes-Benz V-Class will celebrate it fair premiere at the Geneva International Motor Show from 7 to 17 March 2019. A week earlier the biggest member of the Stuttgart-based passenger car family with the new front-end design, engine and 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission is already available to order. Prices in Germany start from 39,631.80 euros (including 19 percent VAT).

New design and even greater comfort
The style and value appeal of the V-Class lead the way in the MPV segment. The V-Class designers in Stuttgart have used a series of targeted measures to give the MPV a new look which follows the design idiom of the current Mercedes-Benz passenger cars. The new V-Class has a broader appearance and an even stronger visual presence thanks to its new front end. This comes courtesy of a new bumper design with striking cooling air inlets and a new diamond structure in the radiator grille. The Mercedes star is positioned centrally in the radiator grille and framed by two slats in silver. The personalisation concept with the attractive AVANTGARDE and EXCLUSIVE lines continue to exist, while the AMG Line will become visually more powerful: it features a new diamond radiator grille with chrome pins and thus delivers a sporty note.
New paint colours in graphite grey metallic and selenite grey metallic expand the spectrum of the well-received black/white tones. Equally new is the optional paint colour steel blue. With the new colour hyacinth red metallic, the new V-Class also optionally makes an especially emotive statement. At the same time, the four new light-alloy wheel designs ensure a powerful and avantgarde appearance. They include 5-twin-spoke 17-inch light-alloy wheels painted in black with a high-sheen finish as well as 18-inch light-alloy wheels in tremolite grey with a high-sheen finish and 5-twin-spoke design or in black with a high-sheen finish and 5-spoke design. At the upper end of the new wheels portfolio are black-painted 19-inch 10-spoke light-alloy wheels with a high-sheen finish.
In the interior, too, the designers have been busy, transposing the design philosophy of the current Mercedes-Benz passenger car models into the new V-Class. The interior of the new V-Class follows the trend of modernity and clarity. In line with the facelift, the V-Class presents itself with new air vents in a more sporty turbine look as well as new dials in the instrument cluster. Thanks to the reduced design, drivers can orientate themselves much more simply. The new upholstery and equipment colour tartufo nappa leather makes a modern and elegant statement. With Lugano leather and nappa leather, each available in black and silk beige, not to mention Santos black fabric, a total of six different upholsteries in light and dark colours is available. Modern and elegant can also be used to describe the new trim element in twin-stripe look which is used on the instrument panel and in the side trim elements. The trim elements in the piano lacquer, ebony wood, carbon fibre and brushed aluminium looks remain.
As part of the facelift, rear passengers can enjoy an especially comfortable space. The optionally available luxury seats for the first rear row are a real treat and, just like in the S-Class, they offer a fully reclining function, back massage and climatisation. A journey in the new V-Class, for example as a VIP shuttle, thus turns into a spa like treatment after a stressful flight or business meeting.
New engine, new transmission – powerful and efficient
In line with the facelift, the Mercedes-Benz V-Class is equipped with the four-cylinder OM 654 diesel engine in three output variants including:
The V 220 d with 120 kW (163 hp) and 380 Nm torque (combined fuel consumption 6.3-5.9 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions 166-156 g/km)1 The V 250 d with 140 kW (190 hp) and 440 Nm torque (combined fuel consumption 6.3-5.9 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions 165-154 g/km)1 And – with new top value in its segment – the V 300 d with 176 kW (239 hp) and 500 Nm torque (combined fuel consumption 6.3-5.9 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions 165-154 g/km)1 In the acceleration phase, the V 300 d can briefly deliver an additional 30 Nm of torque (“overtorque”) in addition to its 500 Nm of torque. The V 300 d accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds. It can reach a top speed of 220 km/h.
The new engine generation is even more efficient and clean and offers further improved noise and vibration characteristics. It is pleasantly quiet inside the vehicle and annoying vibrations have been reduced.
Among the innovative characteristics of the new engine generation are the combination of an aluminium housing and steel pistons, the stepped recess combustion process and NANOSLIDE® cylinder wall coating for reducing friction within the engine. How efficient these measures are can be seen on the basis of the fuel savings of around 13 percent which the new V 250 d can boast in comparison with its predecessor model2.
The majority of components relevant to reducing emission are directly installed on the engine. The integrated technological approach comprising a new stepped recess combustion process, dynamic multiway exhaust gas recirculation and close-coupled exhaust gas aftertreatment facilitates low consumption with low emissions. Thanks to the near-engine, insulated position of the components, the exhaust-gas aftertreatment system enjoys low heat loss and advantageous working conditions. The measures include:
High and low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation including cooling A diesel oxidation catalytic converter (DOC) reduces the carbon monoxide (CO) emissions and unburnt hydrocarbons (HC) A particle filter with SCR catalytic converter functionality (sDPF) An SCR catalytic converter (Selective Catalytic Reduction) for reducing nitrous oxides. Plus, ammonia is mixed into the exhaust gas upstream of the sDPF in the form of AdBlue® An additional Selective Catalytic Reduction catalytic converter (SCR) with ammonia slip catalyst (ASC) in the exhaust gas duct The facelift also sees the V-Class equipped with the 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission for the first time. The particularly comfortable and efficient converter automatic transmission replaces the 7G-TRONIC and is available as standard for the V 300 d (combined fuel consumption 6.3-5.9 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions 165-154 g/km)1 and V 250 d (combined fuel consumption 6.3-5.9 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions 165-154 g/km)1. It is optionally available for the V 220 d (combined fuel consumption 6.3-5.9 l/100 km, combined CO2 emissions 166-156 g/km)1. The driver can use the DYNAMIC SELECT switch to select the drive programs “Comfort” and “Sport” and thus influence the shifting behaviour. Alternatively, “M” mode allows the driver to shift manually using the DIRECT SELECT steering wheel gearshift paddles.
All engine variants of the new V-Class are equipped as standard with rear-wheel drive, but 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive is available as an option. In this way, the new V-Class can move agilely on various types of terrain. The vehicle height remains under the two-metre mark even when equipped with all-wheel drive. Thus the new V-Class does not lose any of its daily usability and can still fit in regular garages as well as multi-storey and underground car parks problem-free.
New V-Class, even safer
The standard features Crosswind Assist, which supports the driver in keeping the vehicle on track even in the case of heavy crosswinds, and ATTENTION ASSIST put the V-Class in a league of its own for safety standards in its segment five years ago. The facelift continues to build on this position.
In this respect, the new Active Brake Assist can now detect the risk of a collision with a vehicle driving in front and initially initiates a visual and acoustic warning. If the driver reacts, Active Brake Assist increases the brake pressure to suit the requirements of the situation. If the driver fails to react, the system initiates autonomous braking. In urban traffic the Active Brake Assist also reacts to stationary obstacles or pedestrians crossing. In this way, accidents can be avoided or, at the very least, the consequences thereof reduced.
Another new safety feature is the optional Highbeam Assist Plus which is available for the first time in the V-Class. In main-beam mode, Highbeam Assist Plus allows the driver to enjoy a permanent, broad illumination of the roadway without dazzling other road users. In the event of vehicles in front or oncoming traffic, the LEDs of the main-beam module are partially deactivated and thus create a U-shaped cut-out in the cone of light. The remaining areas of the roadway continue to be illuminated with the main-beam headlamps (partial main beam).
Facelift also for Mercedes-Benz campers and leisure vehicles
Be it in terms of style or value appeal, performance and efficiency or safety, the Marco Polo family based on the V-Class benefits from the first facelift to the Mercedes-Benz MPV. Tesla Will Reveal Sub-$40,000 Model Y On March 14th In CaliforniaTwitterLinkedInFacebookMarch 3rd, 2019 by Kyle Field

Tesla CEO Elon Musk dropped the news today on Twitter that the Tesla Model Y will be unveiled at an event at the Tesla Design Studio in Hawthorne, California, on March 14.
The highly anticipated compact utility vehicle is expected to enjoy higher demand than Tesla’s Model 3, will be 10% larger, and will cost 10% more, according to Musk. The projection is in line with the pricing gap between the Tesla Model S and the Tesla Model X, with the larger, heavier X commanding a premium price from customers looking to wow their friends and impress their neighbors with its pair of falcon-wing doors.
Speaking of falcon-wing doors, Musk took the opportunity to clarify that the Model Y will not have the hotly debated, over-engineered falcon-wing doors, much to the relief of many potential customers and shareholders alike. Introducing the Model Y into one of the hottest segments of passenger vehicles with normal doors opens it up to the largest possible number of customers and all but ensures that it will have a shot at enjoying the same early success of the Model 3.

The announcement of the Model Y reveal event comes just days after Tesla slashed prices of vehicles across its lineup, the last part of Tesla’s journey to deliver the $35,000 Standard Range Tesla Model 3. Taking the 10% price increase into account, the base configuration of the Model Y would tip the scales at just under $40,000. That is a very healthy price point and puts the car in direct competition with its competition in the internal combustion world, just without any of the the nasty emissions.
Looking at the competition, the BMW X3 starts at $41,000, the Mercedes-Benz GLC starts at $40,700, and the Porsche Macan will set buyers back $47,800. That puts Tesla’s sub-$40,000 Model Y at a significant advantage compared to the competition, on price alone. Looking beyond that, the competition comes with a very real risk that cities will ban combustion vehicles from city centers in the near future as a lever for combatting urban air pollution. As the icing on the cake, the Model Y will also be available in a performance version that will surely put the competition to shame.
Musk previously announced that the Model Y will share 76% of its DNA with the Model 3, allowing Tesla to streamline its parts supply chains and leverage greater economies of scale to get better deals from its suppliers. Building up from the low chassis, the Model Y CUV will have a larger profile, resulting in a slightly higher coefficient of drag than the Model 3, translating to lower efficiency, according to Musk.
While it will not be as efficient as the Model 3, we still expect the Model Y to lead its class in efficiency. Tesla’s ability to design and engineer its vehicles from the chemical composition of its batteries all the way up to the curvature of the nose has translated to a fleet of vehicles that the competition simply can’t touch. Thankfully, early customers have not been as worried about the efficiency of vehicles, focusing instead on the range they are able to achieve per charge.
Make no mistake, though, as electric vehicles continue to move into the mainstream, miles per kilowatt-hour will become the new miles per gallon. The more miles that can be squeezed out of the battery and each kilowatt-hour of power that it contains translates to a lower and lower cost of operation. Looking out 5 or 10 years, that efficiency will form the foundation for the total cost of ownership discussion for operators of large, fully autonomous fleets of electric vehicles.
The March 14th event in Hawthorne, California, at Tesla’s Design Studio will give participants some time with the Model Y, including test drives or at least test rides in the new vehicle. We will be at the event, so stay tuned to CleanTechnica for all the juicy details as they unfold in just two short weeks.

The new Mercedes-AMG GT R Roadster: Hats off to the Beast of the Green Hell

04.

March 2019

Affalterbach

Combined fuel consumption: 12.4 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 284 g/km*Affalterbach. This combination is just irresistible and is limited to 750 units: Mercedes-AMG is combining its top model brimming with motorsport technology with the freedom of the open-air driving experience – crowning the model portfolio of open-top sports cars. The new AMG GT R Roadster (combined fuel consumption: 12.4 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 284 g/km[1]) is just as much at home on winding racetracks as it is on prestigious boulevards or beautiful coastal roads. With its powerful drive and expressive design it addresses a new, lifestyle-oriented target group which lives life to the full. The 430 kW/585 hp V8 biturbo, the adjustable coil-over suspension with active rear axle steering, the active aerodynamics and the intelligent lightweight construction form the foundations for highly dynamic handling characteristics. And like the other roadster models the open AMG GT R also has the triple-layer fabric soft top with a lightweight structure consisting of aluminium, magnesium and steel.
With this latest addition the AMG GT family now has 16 members: five two-door coupés, four roadsters, two customer sports racing cars and five 4-door coupés. “The new AMG GT R Roadster is far more than the combination of the thrilling vehicle dynamics of the GT R with the special flair of our GT Roadsters. It is the essence of two worlds, blending to deliver our brand pledge, Driving Performance, in a very special way. With our GT R Roadster we have without doubt once again developed a brand-defining sports car. It too embodies Mercedes-AMG in form, function and vehicle dynamics and enriches our GT family with a highly exclusive variant limited to 750 units”, says Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Management Board of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.
The AMG 4.0-litre V8 biturbo in the AMG GT R Roadster delivers an output of 430 kW (585 hp) and maximum torque of 700 Nm. This is available over a wide engine speed range from 2100 to 5500 rpm. The eight-cylinder power unit delivers muscular performance in all engine speed ranges, combined with high efficiency. A sprint from standstill to 100 km/h is absolved in 3.6 seconds. The dynamic power delivery continues right up to the top speed of 317 km/h.
Wants to stay ahead even at a standstill: the exterior design
The low-slung front section and the forward-inclined AMG-specific radiator grille create a distinctive “shark nose” impression and make the car appear to sit lower on the road. At the same time, this shape lowers the vehicle's back-pressure point, enhancing the flow of cooling air and the car's aerodynamic performance.
The standard-fit LED High Performance headlamps strengthen the AMG GT family tie with their light signature. A tri-functional, arched light guide takes on the functions of daytime running light, navigation light and turn signals. The multi-chamber reflector system with three single reflectors each for dipped beam and main beam not only ensures optimal illumination of the roadway, but also gives the AMG GT Roadster a sporty, dynamic look which gains even more optical depth as the result of the black background.
The V-shaped arrow-like appearance of the front end also enhances the dynamic looks, thus embodying the uninhibited forwards thrust of the AMG GT R Roadster even before it moves. The front apron in jet wing design and the front splitter emphasise the car's width. The large outer air inlets in the front apron guarantee the increased supply of cooling air to the engine. For this reason, they sport two aerodynamically shaped horizontal fins in place of meshes and as a result route the airflow to the radiators without loss.
Additional Air Curtains on the outside of the front apron calm the airflow, improving the Cd value of the open-top two-seater. Thanks to their narrow, vertical openings, the Air Curtains also guide the air specifically towards the wheel arches, optimising the flow properties. To ensure ideal airflow through the double wheel arch radiators, the roadster additionally features unique wheel arch liners with special cooling-air slits.
Not at all aloof: active aerodynamics profile for more precise handling and better road adhesion
An active aerodynamics profile is concealed almost invisibly in the underbody in front of the engine. Weighing around two kilograms, this light carbon-fibre element is speed-sensitive and automatically extends around 40 millimetres downwards depending on the drive program. This process involves considerable change in the airflow and results in what is known as the Venturi effect, which additionally “sucks” the car onto the road and reduces the front-axle lift by around 40 kilograms at 250 km/h. The aerodynamics profile automatically retracts again depending on the drive program and speed.
The driver can feel the advantages in the steering: the roadster can be steered even more precisely when cornering at high speed and exhibits even better directional stability. Especially during fast cornering and under high lateral acceleration, the vehicle delivers far more agile response with clear steering-wheel feedback while remaining easily controllable at all times. In addition, the drag coefficient is improved. The downforce on the rear axle remains at an unchanged high level.
When the electrically operated profile is extended, the radiator air outlet opens at the front end and precisely guides the air flow towards the double rear diffuser, which therefore also benefits from an optimal flow of air. This improves the handling stability of the rear axle while reducing the temperature level of the hotspots at the rear. At the same time, the aerodynamics measures ensure optimised stopping power by routing more cold air specifically to the wheel disks.
Airy from the front too: the active air management system AIRPANEL
The active air regulation system AIRPANEL included as standard is a particular technical highlight. Vertical louvres at the bottom of the front apron are opened and closed electronically by means of an electric motor in around one second to guarantee the required amount of cooling. Constantly achieving the ideal position calls for highly intelligent and fast control.
During normal driving with no increased cooling demand, the louvres are closed for reduced drag and the air is directed at the underbody. This improves the aerodynamic efficiency. Only when certain components reach predefined temperatures and the air demand is particularly high do the louvres open to allow the maximum cooling air flow to the heat exchangers.
Please take a look at me from the side: flat and sleek proportions
The front wings of super-light carbon add a total of 46 millimetres to the width of the roadster at the front compared with the AMG GT and AMG GT S Roadster and make room for the wider track and large wheel/tyre combinations. The powerfully sculpted wings emphasise the longitudinal dynamics in addition. A further distinguishing feature is the special wing signet featuring a fin and a large air outlet through which the waste heat from the engine bay flows. This fin is perforated and incorporates the AMG diamond logo with five slats.
The side view additionally benefits from the standard-fit AMG Performance forged wheels in matt black. The especially lightweight 10-spoke wheel is exclusive to the AMG GT R models and its highly elaborate design includes a drop-centre rim, a milled groove and two high-sheen rim rings of different width. There are size 10.0 J x 19 ET56 wheels at the front and 12.0 J x 20 ET52 at the rear. The lightweight design of the wheels has three advantages: it reduces the overall weight, the rotatory mass and the unsprung masses.
The brake callipers, which are painted in yellow, can be seen through the wheels. The side sill panels make the vehicle look even lower stance on the road, while inserts in high-gloss black set an individual tone. The same applies to the high-gloss black caps on the housings of the door mirrors.
Broadening out: special rear end design for more cornering speed
The rear end also features numerous, conspicuous differentiations. The aluminium sidewalls make the AMG GT R Roadster 57 millimetres wider at the rear than the AMG GT and AMG GT S Roadster. This creates room for the larger 20-inch wheels and tyres as well as the wider track. These measures make for improved traction while allowing higher cornering speeds.
The wider design of the rear apron with large outer vent openings and vertical swage lines improves the airflow at the rear end, as does the double diffuser. The overall heat dissipation is optimised as the warm air is exhausted by the double diffuser during driving.
A small air outlet is incorporated between the tail lamps for additional dissipation of the heat generated by the rear silencer. A further distinguishing feature of the AMG GT Roadster is the large exhaust tip with centrepiece, which is centrally positioned in the rear apron. It is flanked by two more black tail pipes on the left and right of the diffuser.
The large rear wing with an integral third brake lamp is fixed to the boot lid and increases the downforce on the rear axle. The aerofoil mounts are painted in vehicle colour whereas the blade is finished in high-gloss black. Depending on the application or racetrack conditions the inclination of the aerofoil blade can be mechanically precision-adjusted – for example in order to increase the downforce on the rear axle.
Cap covering the face: the fabric soft top
The three-layered fabric soft top is supported by a magnesium/steel/aluminium structure of low weight, which helps to keep the vehicle's centre of gravity low. The inserted acoustic mat reduces noise.
There is a new exclusive colour shade available for the AMG GT R Roadster, which is also being offered in parallel in the AMG GT R: the fine designo graphite grey magno matt paint extends the colour palette to a total of 14 choices.
Anyone wishing to emphasise the close connection to motorsport even further can choose the optional AMG Carbon-Fibre Packages. With the AMG Carbon-Fibre Package I the front splitter, the fins in the wings, the inserts in the side skirts as well as the rear diffuser are in a high-quality carbon-fibre look. The AMG Carbon-Fibre Package II with the rear aerofoil blade, the rear aerofoil end plates and the outside mirror housing in carbon fibre completes the sporty appearance.
Tailor-made suit for the fashion-conscious: the cockpit
The interior design echoes the design lines of the exterior. The dashboard places a firm emphasis on width, creating an impression of a powerful wing. The driver is integrated into the cockpit thanks to the high beltlines, the door trims with their concave design, the dynamically rising centre console and the low seat position. It feels like a custom-fit suit and made-to-measure shoes – so is very closely connected to the roadster. In the centre console a badge with the inscription “1 of 750” points to the roadster's limited number of units.
With a scarf and cooled cushions on request: AMG Performance seats
The standard-specification AMG Performance seats in black/black Exclusive STYLE nappa leather offer strong lateral support with their more deeply contoured side bolsters on the sitting surface and seat backrest. The neck-level heating AIRSCARF is optionally available, making open-air driving a pleasure even in low outside temperatures. The air outlet is seamlessly integrated in the head restraint section, the temperature of the outflowing air can be adjusted in three stages.
Customers wishing to enjoy comfortable temperatures even on very hot summer days can also opt for the seat climate control, which is also available for the AMG Performance seats. The intensity of the climatisation can be set in three stages.
Other materials and colours are also optionally available:
Exclusive STYLE nappa leather in saddle brown/black Exclusive STYLE nappa leather in macchiato beige /black Exclusive STYLE nappa leather in silver pearl /black As standard the AMG GT R Roadster comes with AMG black carbon fibre/piano lacquer trim elements including the Exclusive Trim Package. The scope comprises the centre console insert and the centre air vent rings in black piano lacquer. The insert in the centre console, the trim around the four air vents in the instrument panel and the trim strips in the armrests in the doors are in high-quality high-gloss carbon fibre. The trim elements are also available in black matt carbon fibre.
Modern times: displays with AMG-specific displays
The AMG GT R Roadster has been given fully digital instrument displays with an instrument cluster measuring 12.3 inches in front of the driver and a 10.25-inch multimedia monitor on the centre console. The instrument cluster offers a screen design with the three AMG-specific display styles “Classic”, “Sporty” or “Supersport”. In the “Supersport” mode, there is also extensive additional information, such as a prompt to shift up in manual transmission mode. The newly designed visualisations in the multimedia display enable further vehicle functions to be experienced even better, e.g. with an animated presentation of the driving assistance, vehicle and communication systems.
Just the touch of a finger away: display buttons in the centre console
The innovative, coloured display buttons in the V-shaped centre console integrate the display and control of transmission logic, suspension, ESP, exhaust system, aerodynamics profile and start/stop function. Using TFT technology the display buttons use intuitively comprehensible symbols to show the function and are easy to operate with just a small tap of the finger. The display buttons are supplemented by the two rocker switches for the drive programs and volume control of the audio system.
Control in an instant: the AMG Performance steering wheel
The AMG GT R Roadster has also been given the new AMG Performance steering wheel as standard. It is characterised by its sporty design, a flattened bottom section with a heavily contoured rim and intuitive operation. The steering-wheel rim is completely covered in DINAMICA microfibre. The galvanised steering wheel gearshift paddles allow an even sportier driving style with manual gear shifting. The integrated Touch Control buttons can be used to control the functions of the digital dash and the multimedia display by means of horizontal and vertical swiping of the finger.
As standard the AMG steering-wheel buttons also have a round controller with an integrated display as well as two vertically positioned coloured display buttons with switches. The AMG drive programs as well as the AMG TRACTION CONTROL can be actuated via the right-hand controller. The selected setting is shown on the colour LCD display directly integrated in the controller.
The two freely configurable display buttons and the additional switches on the left-hand side enable further AMG functions to be controlled directly on the steering wheel. This means that the driver can concentrate fully on dynamic driving without having to take their hands off the wheel. Each required function can be depicted on the display icon and its switch is tapped by the driver to set the respective function. So the two individually preferred AMG functions can be defined exactly and the settings changed with just one tap of the finger.
The AMG Interior Night Package also comes as standard. In this package, the shift paddles, steering wheel spokes, seat insert (on the AMG Performance seat) as well as the door sills are finished in high-gloss black, which combines with the standard-specification AMG carbon fibre/piano lacquer trim elements to further emphasise the sportiness.
No need to fear the scales: intelligent lightweight construction for high agility
A key factor in a sports car's performance is a gross vehicle weight that is as low as it can possibly be. Mercedes-AMG uses an intelligent material mix in order to achieve this aim in the structure of the AMG GT R Roadster. Various aluminium alloys are used for the chassis and body, and magnesium for the front deck. This extremely light element at the front reduces the inertia ahead of the front axle, thus improving the vehicle's agility. The load-bearing structure of the boot lid is of SMC (Sheet Moulding Compound) bonded with carbon fibres. These high-tech plastics excel with their lightweight design, high strength and outstanding surface quality.
The weight-optimised spaceframe is made of die-cast and extruded aluminium sections. The high bending and torsional strength of the entire design enables extreme linear and transverse forces from the drivetrain and suspension to be absorbed and transferred. Unwanted flexibility is thus reduced, with the vehicle responding precisely and directly. The result is that the driver experiences a sports car with maximum dynamics responding with outstanding precision. The body-in-white now also has an integral aluminium crossmember as rollover protection for the occupants.
Light and strong: Materials from motor racing
A host of further measures contributes to weight reduction as part of the AMG lightweight-performance strategy. Light and strong carbon fibre is the material of choice for, among other things, the front wings and the torque tube between engine and transmission.
Now weighing in at just 13.9 kilograms, the carbon-fibre torque tube is about 40 percent lighter than its already weight-optimised aluminium counterpart in the AMG GT. As a structural component of the transaxle drivetrain, it creates a connection between the engine and the transmission with extreme flexural and torsional stiffness. It permits a very direct connection of the drivetrain that is favourable to driving dynamics and also plays a role in the vehicle's balanced weight distribution.
Further weight advantages come from the standard-fit forged wheels, the titanium rear silencer and fewer soundproofing materials.
Will not warp: Carbon tunnel brace
The tunnel brace in carbon further stiffens the body considerably for withstanding the high torsional loads that occur during powerful acceleration. To this end, it braces the two vehicle sides against each other even more effectively in the tunnel area for the torque tube, This significantly increases the torsional rigidity by some 7.5 percent. After the first few metres already, the driver gets an extremely precise driving impression, which is maintained even in the event of extreme vehicle loads when driving at the dynamic limits. The fact that the body of the car is more composed allows even better control of the AMG GT R Roadster under difficult racetrack conditions such as fast, bumpy corners and means that less steering effort is required.
Over and above this, two diagonal braces in the engine bay stiffen the front end. In the AMG GT R, they are likewise made of carbon fibre and represent weight savings of about 50 percent over steel components.
Revs up fast: the AMG 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine
The AMG 4.0-litre V8 biturbo delivers 430 kW (585 hp) in the AMG GT R , the maximum torque of 700 newton metres is available from 2100 to 5500 rpm. Different exhaust gas turbochargers with modified compressor processing and a smaller boost pressure control valve cell as well as sharper engine management application are used compared with those in the other AMG GT models. The boost pressure has increased from 1.2 to 1.35 bar. In addition, the exhaust ports have been optimised and the compression ratio modified. The entire combustion process has been retuned.
For optimum power output even when outside temperatures are high, Mercedes-AMG uses indirect air-to-water intercooling. With optimum flow of air and water, the intercoolers have a separate, two-stage low-temperature water circuit. The first co..
