The Volkswagen Golf Is 45 Years Old, Prepares To Welcome 8th Generation

When the Golf arrived in 1974, the Beetle was 36 years old. That’s a lot by modern standards, but Volkswagen kept making the damn thing in Puebla, Mexico until July 2003. Over 21 million examples of the breed were produced over 65 years, but the Golf is even more popular.
28 photosMore than 30 million were manufactured by June 2013, and as of 2016, the total ballooned to 33 million. Even though it’s not the people’s car the Beetle used to embody, there’s no denying Volkswagen focus a lot with every generation to deliver a world-class hatchback.
Also available as a station wagon (called Variant), in Alltrack flavor, GTD, GTI, all-wheel-drive R, GTE, e-Golf, and Sportsvan, the perennial best-seller turned 45 years old in March 2019. Volkswagen claims that “a new Golf has been ordered every 41 seconds” since 1974, and total sales number in the 35 million.
That’s an average of 780,000 units are delivered each year, an astounding figure by all accounts. Wolfsburg, which is the home of Volkswagen, is where the first generation entered production on March 29th, 1974. First deliveries began on August 5th, and in the first years of availability, the Golf couldn’t muster more than 70 metric horsepower from 1.5 liters of displacement.
This gets us to the 1.5 TSI Evo in the seventh generation, which combines efficiency and performance with the seven-speed DSG. From the 2.0 TSI, the Golf R produces 300 ponies in bone-stock specification. There’s talk Volkswagen might hybridize the performance-oriented model for the next generation, cranking up the output to 330 or even 400 horsepower.
Speaking of which, there’s a new Golf in the pipeline for the 2020 model year. Production will start in June 2019, five months before the ID. Neo electric hatchback goes official. The premiere of the eighth generation is expected in the summer, with deliveries anticipated to start in the fall.
Compared to the Giorgetto Giugiaro-designed first generation, the Mk 8 isn’t as pretty. On the other hand, car safety legislation gave designers more freedom for their visions back in the 1970s.

Mercedes-Benz EQC Electric SUV Now In Production
The Mercedes-Benz of electric vehicles is ready for launch. EVgo launches first curbside fast chargers

With wires running along almost every street in America where cars drive, putting EV chargers along the curb would seem a natural enough place to put them.
While several other countries such as Britain have begun efforts to put charging stations on light poles, in America, chargers have been sited almost exclusively in parking lots and garages.
Now EVgo, a network of mainly DC fast chargers, has set up the first public fast chargers along the side of the street in Sacramento.

The new installation, on 6th Street alongside the city's Southside park and blocks from the major interchange of Interstate 5 and the I-80 business loop, includes three 50-kilowatt DC fast chargers and three new 150-kw DC fast chargers that can provide up to 150 miles of range in less than 30 minutes.
The first cars capable of charging at that speed are just beginning to arrive on the U.S. market with the rollout of the Audi E-tron quattro this month.
DON'T MISS: EVgo, Chargepoint annual reports show growth in electric-car charging
The park is a popular place for locals to hang out, with a pond, and a certified farmers' market, and lots of neighborhood restaurants and shops.
The new 150-kw chargers will have both 175-kw Combo plugs and 100-kw CHAdeMO plugs, while the 50-kw chargers will have both types of plugs rated at 50-kw. (Teslas can use an adapter.) All six chargers are made by ABB.

One challenge was to secure the right of way to reserve parking for EVs at the charging spaces on the street.
“Low-cost and convenient EV charging on our city streets will make it easy for residents and visitors alike to shift to electric vehicles and away from fossil fuels,” said Sacramento Councilmember Steve Hansen. “Now … users will be able get the charge they need and take time to enjoy the park, walk to Insight Coffee, or enjoy the Sunday Farmers Market.”

Third-Generation Skoda Octavia Sells More Than 2.5 Million Units Worldwide

When talking about Skoda, some people might underestimate the reach of the Czech automaker. Controlled by the Volkswagen Group, the best-selling model of the brand is the Octavia, which numbers in the 2.5 million with the third generation alone.
14 photosLaunched in 2012 on the MQB platform and Volkswagen everything, the Typ 5E is produced in the Czech Republic, Russia, India, China, Kazakhstan, and Algeria. It’s an understated success story, and the Octavia is Skoda’s most popular nameplate worldwide thanks to 388,200 sales in 2018.
“Double that of the automaker’s next most popular model,” highlights Automotive News Europe, referring to the Rapid. First utilized in the ‘30s, the nameplate came back in 2012 for a small family car developed to take over three continents. More to the point, those are Europe, Asia, and Africa.
The Scala serves as the replacement for the Rapid, larger and more expensive than the preceding mode. On the upside, it’s much safer, more techy and comfy, and more efficient thanks to improved aero. Having said these, let’s turn our attention back to the Octavia.
Celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2019, the original was introduced in 1959 by AZNP. “A Z N what now?” That used to be Skoda’s name until the communist regime fell, standing for Automobilové Závody Národní Podnik. The Octavia from 1996, the first generation developed from a clean sheet of paper by the Volkswagen Group, got the ball rolling.
Before the 1996 Octavia, however, the Volkswagen Group attempted to redesign the Skoda Favorit, turning it into the Felicia from 1994 to 2001. The Favorit is the last Skoda based on the Czech automaker’s own platform, representing the end of an era for Mladá Boleslav and the Czech automotive industry.
Skoda will redesign the Octavia from the ground up in 2020, eight years after the third generation started production. The fourth generation “is expected to be revealed later this year,” and similar to the Golf Mk 8, the Octavia will utilize an evolution of the MQB platform.

Mercedes-Benz EQC Begins Production as Cheapest Premium Electric SUV Available
6 May 2019, 12:00 UTC ·
by Daniel Patrascu
Home > News > Car Profile
The first Mercedes-Benz car wearing the EQC brand name is getting ready to hit the road in the coming weeks, as the German carmaker announced on Monday the start of production for the SUV, and the opening of the order books.
13 photosStarting at €71,281 in Germany, the EQC is the cheapest of all the premium electric SUVs currently available on the European continent. For comparison, Audi’s e-tron retails on the same market from €79,900, the Jaguar I-Pace from €78.240 and Tesla’s Model X starts at €85,300.
Mercedes will try to make an extra buck by launching the EQC Edition 1886, a version that will be available from launch. This variant will come with increased range and a price tag of €84,930.
Despite the lower price for the entry-level trim, the EQC will offer, besides the feel of a Mercedes, about the same performance as all the others, with a range of 445 – 471 km (276 – 292 miles), as measured in the NEDC cycle, and 402 hp coming from two electric motors, fitted one on each of the axles.
Power for the SUV is stored in an 80 kWh lithium-ion battery built in-house, a battery that can be charged via a 7.4 kW onboard charger or via charging stations of up to 110 kW. If this latter solution is chosen, 80 percent battery capacity can be achieved in around 40 minutes.
Like all the other recent Mercedes cars, the EQC is equipped with the MBUX infotainment system.
“With the Mercedes-Benz EQC, we are entering a new era of mobility. It is part of the growing family of all-electric vehicles at Mercedes-Benz and combines brand-defining features such as quality, safety and comfort,” said in a statement Britta Seeger, the executive in charge with Mercedes-Benz cars sales.
“We offer our customers progressive design and unique ride comfort – and this with a range absolutely suitable for everyday use.”
As said, Mercedes kicked off production for the model, with the first EQC expected to roll off assembly line shortly. It is manufactured at the plant in Bremen, on the same production line as the C-Class and GLC.
