Maserati Alfieri Pre-Production Starting In First Half Of 2020

Home > News > Car Profile

Remember when Honda said it would bring the NSX back, better and more exciting than the original? Took them a long time, and following years of overpromising, the Ford Motor Company overshadowed the reveal of the NSX with not one, not two, but three performance-oriented vehicles at the 2015 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
30 photosMaserati finds itself in a similar problem with the replacement for the GranTurismo, shown as a concept at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show and promising to go into production every six months or so. This time around, the House of the Trident isn’t slacking anymore, deciding to confirm pre-production of the GranTurismo-replacing sports car in Modena, Italy.
An unassuming press release with “public authorities” and “unions” in the title serves as the confirmation. There are two statements of interest to us and prospective customers, starting with “the plan is to upgrade and renew the current production lines starting this autumn.”
Even though Maserati doesn’t name the Alfieri in the release, “the first pre-series production cars of a totally new model, a characteristically Maserati sports car, will roll off these lines starting in the first half of next year.” No points will be awarded to who guesses what the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles-owned brad is talking about.
Maserati previously stated the Alfieri would ride on an aluminum spaceframe and feature two body styles (coupe and cabrio). Under the Maserati Blue sub-brand, the Italian automaker will introduce its “first luxury EV coupe” with E-AWD coming courtesy of three electric motors, 800-volt battery technology, full active torque vectoring, active aerodynamics, and a top speed in excess of 300 km/h (186 mph), based on the Alfieri.
Capable of hitting 100 km/h (62 mph) in approximately two seconds, the Alfieri EV won’t be available at launch. Instead, a V6 plug-in hybrid and standalone V6 engine options will have to make do. It’s believed the entry-level configuration is a twin-turbo V6 with 410 PS (404 horsepower) and rear-wheel drive.
Given time, Level 3 semi-autonomous driving technologies and the D-UV (a.k.a. Alfa Romeo Stelvio by Maserati) will be introduced as well. An all-new Levante, Quattroporte, and “Ghibli MCA” will be revealed by 2022.

2018 Karma Reveros recalled for side curtain airbag issue

2019 Karma Revero Aliso Edition
Karma issued a stop sale on 2018 Karma Revero models following a recall for an airbag issue.

The side curtain airbags have a defective rollover sensor, the company said, and may not deploy in a rollover accident. Side curtain airbags are a key safety feature in a rollover, because when they deploy, they can keep occupants heads from hitting the roof frame and even prevent occupants from being ejected.

CHECK OUT: Karma presents its electric-car vision to China and vies for partners

According to the recall, the 2018 Revero's rollover sensors were inoperable, which would prevent the airbags from deploying in a rollover.

The recall notice reads: “In the event of a roll over crash, the side curtain/head protection airbags may not deploy as intended due to a rollover sensor system that is not enabled.”

READ MORE: Karma gets hit with Fisker recall over airbags

Karma will replace the airbag control unit with one that has rollover sensing enabled and, to bring the cars into compliance with federal safety laws, will also add an airbag warning light and new text in the owners' manual to describe the system.

The recall affects just 231 cars. The company will send out recall notifications to existing owners, and Karma's dealers, in 15 U.S. cities, will perform the recall work.

DON'T MISS: Karma Revero gets more power, BMW 3-cylinder

Karma just revealed the updated 2020 Revero GT at the Shanghai auto show last week, After just revealing the updated 2020 Revero GT with a new engine from BMW, new batteries, motors, and electronics at the Shanghai auto show last week.

The latest recall follows two others last year for the 2018 Revero: One for driver's side mirrors with the wrong glass, and another for side curtain airbags that could detach after inflation. The company also recalled 2012 Fisker Karmas in 2017 as part of the (much) larger Takata airbag recall.

FCA Idles Two Canadian Plants Over Slowing Sales, Increasing Inventories

Impressive as they are, the Challenger and Charger in SRT Hellcat flavor aren’t selling all that well. Not even lesser models or the Redeye are flying off the showroom floor, which is why Fiat Chrysler Automobiles plans “to align production with demand.”
11 photosWhat’s that supposed to mean? In plain English, FCA is idling two plants for one week each in April 2019. The one in Brampton will be offline from April 1st to 8th while Windsor won’t produce a thing from April 8th to 15th. The most important question is, aren’t all automakers doing the same thing when there’s less demand than anticipated?
The answer is not exactly clear, but one thing is certain. Both the Challenger and Charger are some of the oldest cars in their respective segments. Both are underpinned by the LX platform for full-size cars with rear- or all-wheel drive, dating back to the 2005 Chrysler 300 sedan and Dodge Magnum station wagon.
Although developed in America, the LX came out during an era when Chrysler was joined at the hip with Daimler AG. Not much is shared between the vehicle architecture and older Mercedes-Benz sedans, but nevertheless, there’s no denying the LX is as old as the hills.
Automotive News paints an even bleaker picture for Chrysler by highlighting another idling. Windsor Assembly was out of the picture for two weeks in January 2019 “in order to adjust for investories,” then Windsor was offline in the week of February 18th “because of a parts shortage.”
Adding insult to injury, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles announced on Monday that the Canadian plant would shorten production shifts. “Regular production schedules are expected to resume in April 2019” according to Lou Ann Gosselin, spokeswoman for the automaker’s Canadian division.
“We are not providing details beyond the statement,” concluded Gosselin when pressed about the specifics of these idlings, which speaks volumes about how uncompetitive these products are. As far as sales are concerned, the Pacifica and Grand Caravan are down 24 percent and 27 percent in the United States. Sales of the Charger and Challenger are also down by 28 and 8 percent in February 2019 compared to February 2018.
