Next came a lateral move to Sauber, specifically Sauber Petronas Engineering, which was charged with moving Proton beyond its early technical alliance with Mitsubishi. Capito led development of an all-new 2.0-litre engine, and although this didn’t make production his skills at project management were noticed and he was made COO of the Sauber F1 team… Continue reading Meeting Jost Capito, the man behind Volkswagen’s R division

Prince William presents CBE to Gordon Murray for ‘services to motoring’
Legendary automotive designer and engineer is recognised for 50 years’ dedicated service to the automotive industry
Today (2 May 2019), Professor Gordon Murray, the renowned automotive designer and engineer, was presented with a CBE (Commander of the British Empire) by the Duke of Cambridge, Prince William. The ceremony, held at Buckingham Palace, recognised the contributions made by Murray to the motorsport and automotive sectors over the past 50 years.
Gordon Murray said: “Receiving a CBE from Prince William is one of the highlights of my life – right up there with Formula One World Championship wins or creating the world’s fastest production car. The Gordon Murray Group is about to embark on an exciting new chapter, with ground-breaking innovation once again driving our growth. Energised by this accolade I can’t wait to continue the journey, supported by a dedicated and hugely talented team.”
50 years of service
Murray designed his first car in 1967 before moving to the UK to join the Brabham Formula One Team as Technical Director. There he won two world championships (1981 and 1983), before moving to McLaren International as Technical Director in 1988 where the team won three consecutive championships – 1988, 1989 and 1990.
After achieving 50 Formula One Grand Prix wins, Murray went on to establish a new company – McLaren Cars Limited. The company’s first project was the world-famous McLaren F1 Road Car. In 1995, a racing version won two world sports car championships and the Le Mans 24-hour race. Murray guided several other successful projects at McLaren Cars, culminating with the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren programme.
In 2007 Murray formed a new British company for the design, engineering, prototyping and development of vehicles – Gordon Murray Design Limited. The Surrey-based company has a global reputation as one of the finest automotive design teams in the world and is responsible for an innovative and disruptive manufacturing technology: iStream®.
On 14 May, Gordon Murray will launch a new book titled ‘One Formula’, which charts in detail his career over the past 50 years. It includes extensive details about the plethora of vehicles he has designed and engineered over the years from Formula One icons, to legendary road and race cars. Also, it covers many of the fascinating situations he’s encountered and achievements he’s made during his long and distinguished career.

Gordon Murray – biography
Gordon Murray was born in Durban, South Africa in 1946 and gained a Mechanical Engineering Diploma from Natal Technical College. He designed, built and raced his own sports car (the IGM Ford) in the National Class in South Africa during 1967 and 1968.
In 1969 Gordon moved to the UK and joined the Brabham Formula One Team as Technical Director, winning two world championships (1981 and 1983) during his 17 years with the team. Gordon joined McLaren Racing as Technical Director in 1988 and three consecutive championship wins (1988, 1989 and 1990) followed. In 1990, Gordon moved away from Formula One – after 50 Grand Prix wins – to concentrate on establishing a new company for the group, McLaren Cars Limited.
The company’s first project, the F1 road car, is still regarded as one of the world’s best engineered cars. A racing version won two world sports car championships and the Le Mans 24-hour race on its first attempt in 1995. McLaren Cars then completed several other successful projects culminating in the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren programme.
Gordon left McLaren in 2005 to set up his new company Gordon Murray Design Limited (in 2007), of which he is CEO and Technical Director. The innovative British company operates from Shalford in Surrey, and aims to be the world leader in automotive design. It reverses the current industry trend for sub-contracting by having a complete in-house capability for design, prototyping and development.
In 2017, Gordon Murray Design celebrated the company’s 10-year anniversary along with that of the iStream manufacturing process. At a special event, named ‘One Formula’ Gordon Murray also celebrated the 25th anniversary of the McLaren F1 road car entering production, and his 50th year of car design and engineering.

BMW X3 M and X4 M Join Production Queue in Spartanburg, South Carolina

Fresh out of the box as the newest additions to lineup of BMW M models, the X3 M and X4 M have already joined the list of cars being manufactured at the carmaker’s facility in the U.S. With their addition, the location in Spartanburg, South Carolina, increases the number of X models it assembles to nine.
2 photosAnd it’s no surprise that is so, considering the fact that the Xs in the lineup, meaning BMW’s SUVs, accounted for more than half of the company's sales in the country last year. At the same time, with a production capacity of 450,000 vehicles per year, the Spartanburg facility is BMW’s largest in the world and the perfect point of origin for the two cars.
“The addition of these two all-new models plus the first-ever BMW X7, which began production last December, is a testament to the performance, passion and pride of the more than 11,000 people working at Plant Spartanburg and serves to further underscore BMW’s commitment in the U.S.,” said in a statement Knudt Flor, MW Manufacturing CEO.
“Since the BMW X5 was first introduced, creating the premium SAV segment in 1999, Plant Spartanburg has been BMW’s global center of competence for X models and continues to be so today.”
Both the models to be put together in Spartanburg use the same engine, a 3.0-liter that develops 480 horsepower and 600 Nm (442 lb-ft) of torque. Those figures make it the most powerful six-cylinder inline engine ever used in a car by M.
There will be two variants for each of the two Ms, the regular one, if it can be called that, and the Competition. The main difference between them is the fact that the engine on the Competition variants will develop 510 hp and will have a slightly quicker acceleration time. Both cars will enter production this April.

500,000th Fiat Tipo Rolls Off the Production Line
26 Feb 2019, 10:31 UTC ·

Home > News > Car Profile
Fiat isn’t doing too well because the Italians rely too much on the 500 family and on the pedigree of the Panda. The Tipo is somewhat different because it’s been developed an affordable means of transportation.
27 photosWhile cheap, the Tipo isn’t cheerful. Entry-level trims feature low-quality materials throughout the cabin and unimpressive engine options. Go for the other end of the spectrum, and the price gets prohibitive for this segment.
From a high point of 123,762 examples of the breed, sales fell to 102,341 in 2018 as crossovers and SUVs gain preference in Europe. Despite these unimpressive numbers, Fiat is much obliged to announce that 500,000 units have been manufactured in Bursa, Turkey in three years.
The 500,000th car is the Tipo Sport hatchback pictured in the main photo, featuring Mopar parts such as the rear bumper with aerodynamic diffuser. Over 70 percent of the production was sold outside of Italy, making the Tipo the second best-selling Fiat worldwide.
Scale is of the essence this time around. For example, the more expensive and larger Skoda Octavia sold 216,676 units in 2018. As for the Volkswagen Golf, make that 445,303 in Europe alone. Given this information, “the second best-selling Fiat worldwide” doesn’t sound as impressive as it did in the previous paragraph.
The Italians dare to claim the Tipo “is a kind of tailored garment, able to satisfy every customer’s mobility needs and tastes.” Fiat also tried to convince youngsters the Tipo is cool despite the fact most prefer the competition.
Available in three body styles (sedan, hatchback, station wagon) and four trim levels (Street, Mirror, S-Design, Sport), the Fiat starts at €14,800, €16,050, and €17,300 in Italy. A 1.4-liter with 95 PS comes standard, complemented by the 1.3-liter MultiJet (95 PS) and 1.6-liter MultiJet (120 PS).
Depending on the market and engine, what Fiat calls Aegea in Turkey can be optioned with a six-speed automatic or dual-clutch transmission. Last, but certainly not least, the Tipo has been developed to replace three models. These are the Bravo hatchback, Linea sedan, and Stilo MultiWagon.

Ford Adds 550 Jobs In Kentucky Truck Plant To Boost SUV Production
22 Mar 2019, 7:53 UTC ·
by Mircea Panait
Home > News > Car Profile
If you’re in the market for a full-size SUV with truck underpinnings and convenience for the whole family, it’s hard to go wrong with the Expedition. Redesigned for the 2018 model year, Ford can’t keep up with demand for the successor of the fifth-generation Bronco.
26 photosWhat does an automaker do when people want a product but don’t like to wait for their order to roll off the assembly line? Invest in the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, of course! Adding 550 new jobs is just the tip of the iceberg, more so if you remember the Lincoln Navigator is also selling like hot cakes.
Through those 550 jobs, Ford plans to ramp up production by 20 percent. Expedition sales increased 35 percent in 2018 while the Navigator improved 70 percent. There’s also the matter of average transaction price, which grew by $11,700 to $62,700 last year.
Supporting these efforts, Ford is launching a new marketing campaign this week. “Better Big” focuses on the best-in-class towing and legroom of the Expedition, as well as the most driver-assist technology in the segment. “We ‘out-big’ the competition where it counts – towing, interior space and technology,” declared Matt VanDyke, director of U.S. marketing. “Our team completely rethought every inch of Expedition, and its growing sales reaffirm we hit the sweet spot with today’s full-size SUV customers.”
In addition to more workforce, the Kentucky Truck Plant has increased the line speed by cutting down the cycle times of each operation. How did Ford pull it off? By adding more workstations and splitting up tasks to ensure the employees can finish their jobs in the allotted time, thank you!
Production per se will increase after the summer shutdown in July 2019, and if you were wondering, the Expedition can seat eight people and tow up to 9,300 pounds. For first-time homeowners who are starting new families, that’s an offer few can refuse. Does it come as a surprise Ford is discontinuing most passenger cars in the U.S. lineup to focus on trucks and utilities? Not even slightly!

Mercedes-Benz GLB Confirmed For Production In China, Mexico
23 Apr 2019, 16:36 UTC ·
by Mircea Panait
Home > News > Car Profile
Remember when Mercedes used to make cars in Germany? The automaker still does, but on the other hand, globalization and outsourcing took their toll on build quality and reliability. The trend continues with the GLB, which has been confirmed for production in China and Mexico.
25 photosPeking and Aguascalientes are the plants where the mini G-Wagen will be manufactured, and the production model will arrive on dealership lots by the end of 2019. Known as SC 037, the show car came to fruition thanks to a handful of design sketches and a 1:1 clay model.
Based on the MFA2 vehicle architecture of the A-Class, B-Class, and CLA-Class, the GLB is expected to show off the production parts in the summer. In the worst case scenario, make that September at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show. At least one AMG will be offered, most likely the GLB 35 with 2.0 liters of displacement, a turbocharger, and 306 PS (302 horsepower).
The platform can handle more than 400 horsepower in the case of the A 45 S hot hatchback, but Mercedes hasn’t offered details about the GLB in this specification. Given the three-pointed star up front and Affalterbach know-how, there’s no denying the GLB 45 S makes sense.
Be it front- or all-wheel drive, the GLB has the makings of a commercial success thanks to the styling and demand for compact crossovers. Most surprising about the GLB is the three-row layout, offering seats for seven people. The concept features 17-inch wheels and off-road modifications, including all-terrain tires and lost of cladding around the wheel arches.
Being based on the MFA2 vehicle architecture, we wouldn’t be surprised if Mercedes were to offer the 1.3-liter turbo four-cylinder as the standard engine option. Renault calls this motor the 1.3 TCe, and the French automaker offers the engine with 115, 140, and 160 PS (up to 158 horsepower).
Britta Seeger, member of the Daimler AG board responsible for Mercedes-Benz Cars Marketing & Sales, let it slip the EQB is coming in 2021. The German automaker is testing the all-electric option as we speak, and as expected, this model will serve as the smaller brother of the EQC.

Tesla investor provides a look inside new Roadster
2020 Tesla Roadster
At Tesla's self-driving event for investors on Monday afternoon, the company revealed another tidbit: a glimpse of its upcoming second-generation Roadster.
The company parked the new Roadster at the event, and for the first time let outsiders (at least those who have invested significant sums) open the doors and sit in it. The prototype was not available to drive.
Investor Hamid Shojaee took the opportunity to share a 39-second video clip on Twitter. In it, he tries out Tesla's latest approach to door handles, and looks to the squared-off Formula 1-style bat-wing steering wheel, its large center touch screen, as well as its vestigial rear seats.
Starting from the outside, the new door handles are entirely electronic. As he tries to open the door in the video, Shojaee has to try several times to open the door, first swiping up on the sensors, then when that doesn't work, swiping down—as if Tesla needed any more hassles with unusual door handles. Once he swipes down from the top, the door opens on the first try.
Inside, the car's steering wheel looks straight out of a Hollywood Batmobile mockup. Such a vestigial “wheel” only makes sense if the car is steered entirely by wire and has less than about a full-turn lock-to-lock. That's not impossible, and it wouldn't be the only car with a steer-by-wire system.

The Roadster's center screen returns to something like the Model S's original vertical orientation, but it's much bigger, and the car has no second instrument screen as the Model S and Model X do. It also reclines at a steep angle on the raked console, rather than perching atop the center dash as the Model 3's does.
In the rear, the new Roadster has a couple of tiny butt-baskets for seats, reminiscent of the original Porsche 911. That's not necessarily a criticism, but pretty typical for the genre.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said the company plans to sell the $250,000 sports car in 2020. It is expected to have up to 620 miles of range and hit 60 mph from a stop in 1.9 seconds.
What it does not have in terms of typical roadster features is a convertible top.

30 Millionth Volkswagen Passat Rolls Off the Assembly Line In Emden

A silver-painted PHEV serves as the 30 millionth Passat ever made. No other mid-size car comes close to that figure, and looking at the bigger picture, production of the Volkswagen Passat overshadows that of the Beetle (both air-cooled and water-cooled).
38 photosThe station wagon-bodied Passat GTE in the following clip rolled off the assembly line in Emden, Germany on April 3rd, 2019. A different affair from what the Americans know as Passat, the European model shares most of its underpinnings with the Arteon. Being based on the MQB vehicle architecture, the Golf and Atlas are also related to the ever-popular nameplate.
“Passat has become one of the world’s greats,” said Ralf Brandstätter, Chief Operating Officer of the German automaker. “At Volkswagen, we are proud of this successful model, which is still the benchmark within its class today.”
To be used “as a press and test vehicle for the international media over the coming months,” the Passat GTE Variant starts at more than €45,000 in Germany. The closest competitor in the segment, also a mid-size wagon, is the Ford Mondeo Turnier Hybrid that costs in the ballpark of €41,000.
Being a plug-in hybrid, the Passat GTE Variant has the edge thanks to a larger battery. Under the WLTP cycle, the all-electric range levels up to 55 kilometers following the mid-cycle refresh of the eco-friendly model. In addition to being green, the combined output (218 PS) isn’t too shabby at all when compared to the 2.0 TSI and 2.0 TDI four-cylinder turbocharged powertrains.
The eighth generation of the European model, the facelifted Passat now features Travel Assist, IQ.Drive, semi-autonomous driving technologies ranging from zero to 210 km/h, IQ.LIGHT – LED matrix headlamps, and the MIB3 touchscreen infotainment system. Volkswagen revealed the B8 in November 2014, and the engineers refer to this generation as the Typ 3G.
Turning our attention back to May 14th in 1973, that’s when Volkswagen produced the first-ever Passat at the Wolfsburg plant. The Passat replaced the Volkswagen 1600, and only the Golf (35 million) has been produced in greater numbers. Coincidence or not, the Golf also traces its roots back to the 1970s.

Report: Rivian plans six new models by 2025
Rivian R1T
Rivian has been taking, not just the electric-car world, but the car world in general by storm with its planned all-electric pickup and SUV. But its plans don't stop there.
CEO RJ Scaringe told Bloomberg last week that the company will bring six new all-electric models to market by 2025.

We've caught glimpses of the first three: the R1T pickup and R1S SUV that the company showed in prototype form at the LA Auto Show last November, and the spy photos of a high-performance off-road rally car that the company has hinted will be its third model.
Rivian R1S
The pickup is expected to arrive in 2021 as a 2022 model and the seven-passenger R1S SUV a year later. The rally car would arrive sometime after that.
The other models will also be focused on the truck and SUV market, Scaringe said.

Those six electric trucks and SUVs may not be the end, either. They comprise models that Rivian will produce under its own brand, but the company has said that it plans to license its “skateboard” electric-car chassis to other automakers as well, to produce products that won't compete directly with its own models.
In its latest investment round last fall, Rivian announced that it received $700 million from Amazon, and rumors swirled that the company was also talking to GM.

In the interview, Scaringe revealed that the company rejected an offer from GM to trade its electric powertrain expertise with GM in return for GM's manufacturing and production prowess, in order to protect its ability to license its technology to other automakers.
The Michigan-based startup automaker also owns the vast former Mitsubishi factory in Normal, Illinois, that used to churn out everything from Eclipse hatchbacks to hulking Endeavor SUVs (and Chrysler, Dodge, and Plymouth badge-engineered products). That's where Rivian plans to produce its own cars, as well as potentially those for other clients.
