Ferrari Discontinued GTC4Lusso In Secret, No Replacement Announced

When the FF was introduced in 2011 at the Geneva Motor Show, the Prancing Horse of Maranello took a bit of a bet. Instead of conventional all-wheel drive, Ferrari decided on two transmissions for the front and rear axles.
10 photos
2,291 examples were produced until 2016 when the facelift came out, renamed to GTC4Lusso and marketed as all-new even though that’s not true. As opposed to the V12-only predecessor, the three-door shooting brake added a twin-turbo V8 as the entry-level option, known as the GTC4Lusso T.
The eight-cylinder model also happens to be rear-wheel drive, giving the car a different character in the twisties even though 4WS four-wheel steering is shared with the V12 engine. 2020 is the final year for the GTC4Lusso, and Ferrari didn’t even care to announce the discontinuation in an official manner.
Road & Track received an e-mailed statement from Maranello in this regard, claiming that it’s all in accordance with the Italian automaker’s five-year model strategy announced in 2017. “Ferrari has phased out production of the GTC4Lusso and GTC4Lusso T,” and no, there’s no word of a replacement.
The Prancing Horse may be a little busy with the development of the Purosangue these days, which is said to serve as a successor although that’s not the case. The FUV – short for Ferrari Utility Vehicle – is said to feature five doors while the GTC4Lusso twins feature three doors and seating for four.
Even Maranello is aware of the differences between these two, claiming that the Purosangue will be differently positioned to the GTC4Lusso. Expected no later than 2022 under the Tipo 175 codename, the SUV will ride on a front-mid-engined platform designed for V6, V8, V12, and hybridized drivetrains.
All-wheel drive has also been confirmed, along with a double-clutch transaxle, rear-seat entertainment, and a more modern Human Machine Interface. Given the know-how that Ferrari gained from the development of the SF90 Stradale, a plug-in hybrid option with ludicrous performance is very likely as well.

Tesla Model Y Production To Start In Fall Of 2020

25 Jul 2019, 21:37 UTC ·

Home > News > Car Profile

Tesla has already started to gear up for Model Y production at the Fremont facility in California, and the same can be said about the Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai, China. The Palo Alto-based automaker is also confident that the similarities between the Model Y and Model 3 will help production to a great extent.
11 photos
More surprisingly, however, Tesla didn’t decide where to manufacture the electric crossover until the latest quarterly results were published. Investors were told that “due to the large market size for SUVs – as well as higher ASPs – we believe Model Y will be a more profitable product than the Model 3 sedan.”
“Additionally, we are making progress managing Model Y cost with only a minimal cost premium expected over Model 3.” Beyond this choice of words, we know since March 2019 that the bigger brother of the Model 3 will start at $39,000 before savings in the United States of America for the Standard Range.
Level up to the Long Range with rear-wheel drive, and you’re looking at $47,000, 5.5 seconds to 60 mph, and 130 mph in terms of top speed. EPA-rated range is estimated at 300 miles for the rear-wheel drive and 280 for the dual-motor option and Performance. 18-inch wheels come standard, and customers can also opt for a seven-seat layout for an additional $3,000 starting from 2021.
From a design standpoint, the Model Y is more or less a tall hatchback that combines the vehicle architecture of the Model 3 with the profile of the Model X. Because it’s heavier and less aerodynamic than the sedan, it shouldn’t come as a surprise the Model Y isn’t as capable in terms of electric range.
Tesla targets a global output of more than 500,000 vehicles “in the 12-month period ending June 30th, 2020” as demand for the Model 3 keeps on growing. The factory in China is crucial to this figure, and in the Middle Kingdom, the Model 3 is priced at 328,000 yuan to steal away customers from premium sedans.

BMW Starts Making Three New Models in the 8 Series, M8 Gran Coupe Coming by 2020

2 Jul 2019, 14:49 UTC ·
by Daniel Patrascu

Home > News > Industry

BMW is wasting no time with the launch of its new range toppers in the 8 Series. Shortly after their presentation, the Germans announced they’ve started production of the 3 newcomers to the series, the Gran Coupe and M8 in both coupe and convertible body styles.
40 photos
As they join the existing 8 Series coupe and convertible on the assembly lines at the plant in Dingolfing, the 8 family has grown to a total of five members in a little over a year since its birth, one of the fastest expansions of a bloodline in the industry.
And this is not the end of it. By the end of the year, BMW announced it is planning to launch the M8 variant of the Gran Coupe, increasing the number of new cars in the range even further.
It’s not clear what fuels the carmaker’s confidence in this bloodline. BMW says its focus in the mid-term will be high-end luxury cars, but the unstoppable love for the 8 Series remains pretty much a bet.
The new 8 Series is a revival of an older nameplate. In 1989, BMW lunged forward into the grand tourer segment with the launch of the original 8, a car that was to become the first road machine fitted with a V12 working in conjunction with a 6-speed manual transmission.
Despite their optimism, the Bavarians were unable to keep the model in production for more than a decade. The original 8 died out in 1999 just as it’s convertible variant was about to be presented.
In mid-2019 the 8 was revived, and then some. In the span of just a few months, BMW launched the 8 Series coupe, its soft-top variant, the high-performance M8, both coupe and convertible, and the four-door variant named Gran Coupe.
Just to put things into perspective, the sales for the 8 Series coupe had just begun when all the others appeared, and it’s too early to say whether BMW struck gold or coal with this line of cars.

Toyota To Build New Crossover At Alabama Plant, It's Probably the FT-4X

12 Jul 2019, 10:38 UTC ·
by Mircea Panait

Home > News > Car Profile

Not that long ago, Toyota and Mazda were looking for a place in the United States where they could build a factory. The two parties settled for Huntsville, Alabama and $1.6 billion in investments. Come 2021, the assembly plant will be up and running with a yearly capacity of 300,000 vehicles.
51 photos
MTMUS is where Mazda plans to produce a new crossover while Toyota would make the Corolla. But the bigger of the two companies decided to backtrack on that, shifting production to “a new, yet-to-be announced SUV.” The best-selling RAV4 and growing demand for crossover utility vehicles lead us to believe that the FT-4X from the 2017 New York Auto Show is the culprit.
Toyota will release more details in regard to the mystery model at a later date, and the Corolla will continue production in Blue Springs, Mississippi for the foreseeable future. At MTMUS, up to 4,000 jobs will be created to support crossover production for both Mazda and Toyota.
Aimed at “millennial-aged professional confined to city limits,” the FT-4X has been designed in Newport Beach, California as a “four-wheel-drive toolbox” with “Rugged Charm compact design” and “a long list of unique functionalities.” If you’re fed up with this marketing mumbo-jumbo, so are we. In all likelihood, the concept will morph into a sub-RAV4 model with limited capabilities off the beaten track and a hybrid option to appease the EPA.
Equipped with 18-inch Goodyear all-season tires and standing 167.3 inches long, the FT-4X comes with a four-cylinder engine, selectable low-range, MacPherson strut suspension up front, and a double-wishbone arrangement for the rear axle. It’s a promising crossover so far, but no an heir-apparent to the FJ Cruiser or a mini-me version of the Land Cruiser with the big ol’ V8.
Speaking of which, word has it the Land Cruiser will switch to a force-fed V6 for the next generation of the full-size SUV. That wouldn’t come as a surprise if you take a look at how Lexus dropped the V8 from the engine range of the LS, but on the other hand, don’t forget that Lexus also prepares to welcome a twin-turbo V8 in the LC F.

Volkswagen Beetle Production Comes To A Grinding Halt

10 Jul 2019, 16:56 UTC ·

Starting at $20,895 in the United States, the Beetle is no longer available to order. The final example of the breed – a coupe finished in Denim Blue – will be exhibited at the Volkswagen museum in Puebla. Speaking of which, the first-ever Beetle manufactured in Mexico rolled off the assembly line in 1967.
12 photos
Known as the Type 1 back when Volkswagen was nothing more than the dream of a mad man, the Beetle was redesigned from the ground up in 1997 with the introduction of the New Beetle. In other words, it was a re-bodied Golf Mk. 4 with a flower vase next to the steering wheel. Then the Volkswagen Group A5 vehicle architecture of the Golf Mk. 6 served as the building block for the current model, packing up to five cylinders and 2.5 liters of displacement.
From air cooling to liquid cooling, rear-engined to front-engined, body-on-frame to unibody, the Beetle had a long and interesting run since it was unveiled in 1938. Soon after the second war to end all wars, the factory in Wolfsburg transitioned to civilian Beetle production in 1947. As a side note, Wolfsburg was founded in 1938 by the Nazi regime to house the German automaker’s workforce.
Over the years, the Beetle has been treated to countless special editions and one-off concepts. The Barbie, Denim, and Dune come to mind, but Volkswagen doesn’t plan to revive the nameplate anytime soon. Production at the Puebla factory will be reallocated to a compact SUV tailored to North America, slotted below the seven-seat Tiguan which is called Tiguan Allspace in the Old Continent.
Even without the Beetle, the peeps at Volkswagen took inspiration from the little bug when developing the ID.3 electric hatchback. The MEB-based vehicle features an electric motor at the rear, driving the rear wheels with up to 204 PS (201 horsepower) and 310 Nm (229 pound-feet) of torque.
The I.D. Buggy concept is rumored to enter limited production in the 2020s on the MEB, and if Volkswagen proves the rumors true, then the Beetle would get a spiritual successor of sorts. The best-known buggy with Beetle underpinnings is the Meyers Manx, which was built in limited numbers in the 1960s.

2020 Skoda Kamiq Starts Production as Under €20K European SUV

Home > News > Car Profile

The first ever city SUV designed by Skoda, the Kamiq, has officially started rolling off production lines in Mladá Boleslav, marking an important moment for the carmaker as it seeks to expand even further into this growing segment.
40 photos
Built to complete the range that until recently comprised only the Kodiaq and Karoq, the Kamiq is intended to be a noteworthy proposition for European city dwellers in terms of what it has to offer, but also because of its price.
Announced at the beginning of the month, pricing for the SUV starts at €17,950, just a few hundred euros above the price of the much smaller Scala model.
The Kamiq is built on Volkswagen’s MQB platform, and is about the same size as the German T-Roc, but uses the revised design that debuted in 2018 on the Scala.
At launch, the Scala comes equipped with a choice of three gasoline and one diesel powerplants, all of them with direct-injection, a start/stop system and turbocharged.
The gasoline lineup starts with the 1.0 TSI that develops 95 PS and is paired to a manual 5-speed gearbox and ends with the 1.5 TSI that develops 150 PS and maximum torque of 250 Nm. The only diesel engine on the table is the 1.6 TDI good for 115 ps and 250 Nm of torque.
The Kamiq enters a booming segment. In 2018, compact SUVs sold 12.3 million globally, while SUVs posted sales of 6.6 million units. And there’s room enough for the Kamiq too, despite in-house competition from Volkswagen’s city SUVs, the T-Roc and T-Cross.
“Over the past few months, we have made all of the provisions in production and logistics to successfully launch the Kamiq in the city SUV segment,” said in a statement Michael Oeljeklaus, Skoda executive in charge with production.

“We are convinced that – in typical Skoda style – the Kamiq too will impress our customers with its excellent quality and many practical features.”

BMW Starts Production Of FWD 1 Series Hatchback

8 Jul 2019, 13:12 UTC ·

Home > News > Car Profile

Codenamed F40, the third generation of the 1 Series is now in production at the Leipzig factory in Germany. The facility is also responsible for the 2 Series Coupe and Convertible, M2 Competition, 2 Series Active Tourer, i3, and i8.
58 photos
The first-ever example of the breed is a 118i with the sport design package and blue paintwork, an underwhelming car given the output of the three-cylinder turbo engine. The B38 develops 140 PS (138 horsepower) and 220 Nm (162 pound-feet) of torque in this application, and the suck-squeeze-bang-blow is sent from the crankshaft to the front axle by way of a six-speed manual gearbox.
BMW will extend F40 production to the Regensburg plant in November, and further still, the 2 Series Gran Coupe will follow with front- and all-wheel drive. As a rival to the Mercedes-Benz CLA, the F44 leaves much to be desired. At the very top of the range, the M135i xDrive will have to suffice with 306 PS (301 horsepower) from two liters of displacement and a turbocharger.
The previous generation of the 1 Series, called F20 for the five-door hatchback and F21 for the three-door coupe, was produced over the course of eight years in 424,111 units. With its dismissal, people hope that Alfa Romeo will redesign the Giulietta with rear- and all-wheel drive on the Giorgio platform.
For the time being, the most exciting model in this segment is the A 45 S 4Matic+ without a shadow of a doubt. Mercedes-Benz has integrated Drift Mode and more than 400 horsepower in a compact-sized hatchback, and this setup will extend to the CLA coupe-styled sedan and the GLB crossover utility vehicle.
Turning the focus back on the 1 Series, the F40 is also available with a three-cylinder turbo diesel and four-cylinder turbo diesel. An eight-speed automatic transmission and seven-speed DCT are also offered, and the entry-level engine option in Germany is the 116d.
On that note, how do you feel about BMW utilizing the UKL2 platform for the newest 1 Series of them all?

Cadillac Discontinues the CTS, CT5 Prepares To Replace It

4 Jul 2019, 12:20 UTC ·
by Mircea Panait

Home > News > Car Profile

After 17 years in production and three generations, the CTS has been retired from the Cadillac lineup. The final example of the breed – manufactured for the 2019 model year – features a VIN ending in K0148662.
11 photos
Cadillac Society reports the Lansing Grand River assembly plant in Michigan finished the vehicle in Black Raven, a glossy paint which complements the sharp lines of the mid-sized sedan rather nicely. The CT5 prepares to enter production there for the 2020 model year, along with the CT4.
Both models share the GM Alpha 2 vehicle architecture, an evolution of the GM Alpha utilized by the ATS, CTS, and Chevrolet Camaro. Developed for rear- and all-wheel-drive applications, this platform is capable of taking various engine options ranging from a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo to the Cadillac-exclusive Blackwing V8 and small-block V8 of the Camaro.
Turning our attention back to the CTS, the nomenclature was introduced for the 2003 model year on the Sigma platform. A 3.2-liter powerplant with six cylinders and 220 horsepower was offered in the beginning, then replaced by 3.6- and 2.8-liter engines. The CTS-V followed in 2004, packing the LS6 small-block engine with 400 ponies and 395 torques.
The LS6 was also found in the engine bay of the Corvette Z06, sharing its architecture with the LS1. In terms of suck-squeeze-bang-blow, the magnum opus of the CTS-V lineage is the third generation. General Motors once again made a case for the engine from the Corvette Z06, packing 640 horsepower and 630 pound-feet of torque on this occasion.
Given these numbers, the CT5-V is a disappointment in the making. Cadillac did mention a hotter version is coming, and with a bit of luck, the twin-turbo V6 will be replaced by a twin-turbo V8. In all likelihood, a de-tuned Blackwing engine from the CT6-V will be the culprit.
The CTS continues to be listed on the automaker’s U.S. website, starting at $46,995 excluding destination charge. Customers who prefer all-wheel drive can opt for this feature for an additional $2,000.

GM Announces Arlington Investment, T1XX-based Large SUVs Coming In 2020

27 Jun 2019, 10:28 UTC ·

Home > News > Industry

Specialized in large SUVs from the Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac brands, Arlington Assembly prepares to the next generation of utility vehicles for the 2021 model year. General Motors is investing $20 million towards this goal, and the upgrades are scheduled to be completed in 2020.
16 photos
Looking at the bigger picture, General Motors invented the segment in 1935 with the Carryall Suburban in 1935. But as of late, the Ford Motor Company got ahead with the latest and the greatest Expedition and Lincoln Navigator. But nevertheless, the biggest of the Big Three in Detroit plans to bounce back to its former days of glory.
“We’ve been building trucks in Texas for more than 20 years, and our additional investment in Arlington Assembly is proof of our commitment and confidence in our Arlington team,” declared Gerald Johnson, executive vice president of Global Manufacturing. “We are counting on the Arlington team to continue focusing on building the highest quality products possible for our customers while preparations continue for the launch of the next generation of our full-size SUVs.”
“Highest quality” is not how we’d describe General Motors. Even the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, whose T1XX vehicle architecture will underpin the 2021 Cadillac Escalade, features questionable plastic in the cabin, an inefficient Tripower turbo four-cylinder engine, and substandard ride quality.
The Escalade will be joined by the Tahoe, Suburban, and Yukon, and all of them will switch to independent rear suspension thanks to the T1XX body-on-frame platform. In the case of the Cadillac, the Blackwing V8 is expected to join the engine lineup as the next best option after the small-block V8.
Opened in 1954, the Arlington-based facility employs 4,500 people these days. No fewer than three shifts are operated, and Arlington switched from cars to truck-based vehicles in 1997. B platform-based vehicles such as the Buick Roadmaster, Chevrolet Caprice, Impala, and Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser were manufactured there before the switch.
Thanks to a series of purchase agreements, Arlington Assembly runs entirely on wind energy. This makes the plant one of the greenest in the United States, and that’s funny if you remember what kind of gas-guzzling leviathans are manufactured there.

Even though the taillights could’ve been better designed, the CLA Shooting Brake is a beautiful car for the compact segment. It’s also practical thanks to this particular body style, which features a 505-liter trunk as opposed to the 460 liters of the C-Class T-Modell.

Now in production in Hungary, the CLA Shooting Brake is manufactured by a “highly-motivated and well-trained workforce.” According to the site manager and chief executive officer, Christian Wolff, “these colleagues ensure that the success story of the CLA will continue at Kecskemét.”

Production at the Hungarian plant commenced in 2012, and these days, the A-Class and CLA Coupe are also built there. Starting in 2020, Kecskemét will utilize CO2-neutral electric power and the remainder of Mercedes-Benz plants in Europe will follow by 2022.
Coming with the latest version of Mercedes-Benz User Experience, the CLA Shooting Brake also features MBUX Interior Assist, gesture recognition, Energizing comfort control, and active safety functions from the S-Class luxury sedan. Since the originals were launched, both the coupe and family-oriented model totaled 750,000 sales.
The biggest market for the CLA-Class is China, followed by the United States and Germany. Across the Atlantic, CLA-Class customers are “on average around ten years younger than the average Mercedes-Benz customer.” Turning our attention back to the Hungarian plant, more than 4,700 employees are responsible for the production of more than 190,000 cars every year.
So far, the CLA Shooting Brake has been announced with eight engine options. The list starts with the 180 at 32,213 euros in Germany, followed by the 200, 220, 250, and AMG 35. Three turbo diesels are also available, namely the 180 d, 200 d, and 220 d. The AMG 35 is the most powerful of the lot, packing 306 PS and 400 Nm of torque from 2.0 liters of displacement.
The lineup will be completed by the 45 and 45 S, which utilize a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine capable of more than 400 horsepower. Now that sounds like a fun family car, don’t you think?
