After 20 years, the author sold her mobile home. It’s not only a wistful farewell to the family vehicle, but also to a style of travel. But it’s not what it used to be.
We were out and about in Andalusia in winter when the mileage on the analogue speedometer dial in our camper jumped from 299,999 to 300,000. “Finally retracted”, I wrote on December 1st, 2022 to the somewhat blurred speedometer picture in my Instagram feed and was sure that many more trips in our old Mercedes van would follow.
A good six months later in Mainz, the parking lot where our mobile home was always parked is empty. A few boxes of camping equipment are stacked in the basement. And there’s a farewell photo hanging on the fridge: My husband and I are sitting there for the last time with our two grown-up children in the sliding door of our mobile home, which now belongs to a new family from the Rhine-Main area.
