The SPD achieved its best election result in the European elections with 26.3 percent in Emden. Along with Bremen, Bremerhaven and Herne, the Frisian port city was one of the four remaining places in Germany where the Social Democrats became the strongest party. However, the joy of the local comrades is limited. The district association says there is “just horror” about the result. Because only those who don’t know what things were like in the far northwest can celebrate over 26.3 percent.
