Golf pulls up the compact classIn a car market that shrank overall in May, a strong final spurt by the VW Golf pulled the entire segment up. According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority, a total of 48,324 compact cars were newly registered, 29 percent more than in the same month last year. Of these, 8,971 units were for the VW Golf, which increased by 65 percent. The compact car is once again Germany’s bestseller shortly before the launch of the facelifted model in the summer. The losers of the month include SUVs and off-road vehicles, which lost 5.5 and 7.0 percent respectively. However, with a combined market share of almost 40 percent, they remain the dominant vehicle class.
