There was a long-standing story about Economics Minister Robert Habeck that his favorite economist was Mariana Mazzucato. She recently had to dispel the rumor in this newspaper that she had the Vice Chancellor’s ear. If Habeck thinks she’s so great, he should call her back, said Mazzuccato. However, another economist is officially heard by Habeck, although it is another question whether he will listen to him: Simon Jäger, labor market researcher and professor at the renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), has been putting his stamp on the discipline for a long time – and for several years now also the discourse in his home country. No other economist of his generation gets involved in economic policy debates in Germany as much as he does.
