Bridges, roads, walls, ceilings: the properties of concrete ensure that it is irreplaceable as a building material in many places. The most important ingredient in concrete is currently cement, but its production causes a lot of climate-damaging CO2 emissions. The high temperatures and chemical processes required to produce cement are responsible for around eight percent of total global CO2 emissions.
