German FAZ: Europe’s battery hopes come to grief 007302

It was news that went through the auto industry like a small shock wave. The Shanghai state-owned company SAIC wants to begin mass production of solid-state batteries in two years. What you need to know is that solid-state batteries are the great hope for electric cars. They are safer, cheaper and have a much higher energy density, meaning you can drive longer on a single charge. The first models from the premium brand IM Motors are scheduled to be delivered in early 2027. SAIC is therefore earlier than its competitors from Japan – and BMW and Mercedes are not thinking of series use before the end of the decade, as we hear in the industry.
