A few days before Malu Dreyer announced her resignation, the Prime Minister of Rhineland-Palatinate informed her Lower Saxony counterpart Stephan Weil about the planned step. The two Social Democrats came into office almost at the same time in 2013, spent a lot of time together at prime ministerial conferences and otherwise get along well.
