There was a deafening noise when the board members of the Volkswagen Group arrived in Hall 11 of the Wolfsburg headquarters on Wednesday morning. Around 25,000 employees have gathered inside or are standing outside the gates and are watching the events on video screens. They hold up banners and chant “We are Volkswagen, you are not,” as participants report. In her speech, works council boss Daniela Cavallo then discussed the general settlement with management. She complains that the VW management team has failed to restructure the company. The fact that there is now a threat of factory closures and large-scale layoffs is an “indication of poverty” and a “declaration of bankruptcy.” The union will offer “fierce resistance”.
