The future should look like the future, and so Tesla boss Elon Musk presented his idea of autonomous driving last week in the Warner Bros film studios, which specialize in illusions. Unlike in previous years, he did not present an abstract vision, but concrete products. In the foreground was the “Cybercab” robot taxi, a flat flounder with butterfly doors and two seats. The prototype completely dispenses with a steering wheel and pedals. The laser scanner on the roof that is typical of other providers’ autonomous vehicles is also missing. Although Musk did not comment in detail about the sensor technology used, he spoke of control via an “AI perspective”, which suggests that he primarily relies on the interpretation of camera data.
