The signs point to a storm at Europe’s largest car manufacturer, Volkswagen. There is a dispute that is visible to everyone and that has been raging for weeks and is now threatening to escalate: the conflict between management and the workforce over drastic cost reductions and possible factory closures. The company wants to implement wage cuts of ten percent for around 130,000 German VW employees. Investments in new electric cars cost billions, and most models have so far sold poorly. The works council warned this week that three of the ten German VW plants to date are to be closed according to company management’s plans. That would be unprecedented in the history of Volkswagen.
