The photo from 1955 shows one of the most important managers of the German economic miracle. On the occasion of the production of the millionth VW Beetle, Heinrich Nordhoff, the CEO of the Volkswagen Group, had the entire workforce of the Wolfsburg plant, 30,000 employees, gather in front of the factory halls. They formed the background for the iconic shot. The difference to today’s situation could hardly be more obvious than in this picture. With a single product, the Beetle, Volkswagen had become a force in the country. The automobile industry as a whole was one of the mainstays of Germany’s economic resurgence after the World War.
