German FAZ: Currywurst à la Volkswagen is now available as a finished dish 009403

Volkswagen is increasingly about the sausage: from mid-June, VW currywurst should also be available in the supermarket-as a complete dish for the microwave. VW wants to give the sales of the factory meat product really thrust again. “We want to increase that again now,” said the head of the Volkswagen meat shop, Dietmar Schulz, in Wolfsburg. Ganz is not the idea: Meica has been offering a currywurst as a ready dish for the microwave since 2001, already cut and completely with curry powder and ketchup. Other manufacturers followed up. And the VW Wurst has also been in the supermarket in northern Germany since 2007. So far, however, only to fry. VW currywurst at Edeka and Nettodas should now change the new finished sausage. First of all, it will only be available in northern and eastern Germany near Edeka and Netto. Yes, according to Schulz, that should only be the beginning. The goal is a nationwide distribution. “And I am convinced that we will develop very quickly beyond northern Germany.” The Wolfsburg ready-made sausage will differ more about the competition from the products of the competition: the curry powder is missing to sprinkle it. This was deliberately avoided, says Schulz. Because at VW the spice is already in the sausage itself, as is in ketchup. “There is already enough curry in there,” says Schulz. “There is no longer a powder.” More sausages than cars of the Markedie VW currywurst, once developed for your own factory canteens, has already been the best-selling product of the Wolfsburg core brand. 8.552 million pieces were discontinued in canteens and supermarkets in 2024. This faced around 5.2 million cars and vans with VW logo. Including all company daughters, the vehicles with 9.03 million were still just ahead. But during the car heel last weakened, the sausage could continue to grow. The VW currywurst was launched in 1973. It is manufactured in the butcher’s shop of the factory -owned Volkswagen Service Factory. VW even gave her its own part number: 199 398 500 A. Currywurst spell called former Chancellor Schröder to the pland of the classic from a VW canteen in Wolfsburg, in 2021 nationwide caused a fuss. Above all, the reaction of SPD commissioner Gerhard Schröder on the “strength of the skilled worker and skilled worker in production” fueled a debate at the time. In 2023 VW raised the currywurst spell in the canteen in question. In the remaining more than 30 canteens and kiosks in the factory, the meat product had always remained on offer.
