Car production is still ongoing in the Transparent Factory in Dresden. But the numbers that Volkswagen produces there are marginal – compared to an industry that relies on factories producing hundreds of thousands of cars a year. In the heart of the Saxon state capital, right next to the Great Garden, three dozen cars roll off the assembly line every day in single-shift operation. Of the 550 employees at its peak, just over half are still left. They build the electric ID.3, a compact car that the Zwickau factory also produces.
