Britain’s luxury automakers prepare for worst as Brexit looms – Automotive News Europe

Britain would suffer most if it lost free trade with European markets since 80 percent of vehicles assembled in the country are exported, mostly to the European Union. But for Germany the stakes are also high. In 2016, Britain was the largest single export market for German manufacturers, who sold 800,000 new cars there, or… Continue reading Britain’s luxury automakers prepare for worst as Brexit looms – Automotive News Europe

Porsche Taycan, Electrify America shutdown, Mazda plans: Today’s Car News

Porsche Taycan prototype
Porsche plans to include three years of free DC fast charging from Electrify America with its new Taycan electric car. For now, it's a good thing the car isn't arriving too soon, as Electrify America has had to shut down many of its CCS Combo fast charge plugs over safety concerns. Mazda balances conflicting priorities (and regulators) in its strategy for fuel-efficient and electric cars. And a new study reveals which countries are leading the race for electric cars. All this and more on Green Car Reports.

In an effort to compete with Tesla—but without building its own complete fast-charge network—Porsche is planning to offer three years of free fast charging at Electrify America DC fast chargers for those who buy its upcoming Taycan electric car. The Taycan is expected to be the first car that can use 350-kilowatt fast chargers when it goes on sale late this year.

Electrify America had to shut down those chargers this week, however, after safety concerns arose over similar chargers in Switzerland.

At a recent preview drive, Mazda revealed more on its plans to bring diesels and an electric car to the U.S., but doesn't plan any hybrids for now.

A new study reveals that the U.S. places second after China in adoption of electric cars. Some other findings, however, are more surprising.

Mercedes-Benz revealed plans to show a new concept car later this year that will demonstrate how cars can avoid crashing altogether using artificial intelligence.

Finally, Ford plans to offer owners a new loyalty rewards program similar to those from airlines and grocery stores, to encourage customers to bring their cars back to the dealership for service.

Mercedes-Benz model cars: new Actros tractor with semitrailer. A giant in small form

29.

January 2019

Stuttgart

Stuttgart. This is a sight which will get all model car and truck fans' hearts beating a little bit faster: Mercedes-Benz presents the first ever car transporter in 1:18 scale. The transporter is a combination of the new model series of the legendary Actros GigaSpace tractor unit and a fitting semitrailer capable of transporting up to sex model cars of 1:18 scale. A perfect composition right down to the finest details, the car transporter measures 113 cm in length and weighs 10 kg!
The predominant standard format with respect to commercial model vehicles was previously 1:50. Mercedes-Benz has collaborated with renowned model vehicle manufacturer NZG to create their first tractor unit and semitrailer combination in the 1:18 scale. This opens up entirely new horizons for commercial vehicle models. Even the tiniest of details inside and outside the Actros are clearly recognisable. And then there's the 96.5 cm long car transporter body which is equally feature-rich as the original trailer. The car transporter can be loaded up with as many as seven Mercedes-Benz model cars from the broad 1:18 scale portfolio of Mercedes and smart vehicles.
With the development of this scale model in commercial vehicles, Mercedes-Benz has moved into unfamiliar territory. Ten months of development were necessary to get the 22.5 cm wide, 13.7 cm high semitrailer into shape. It is made of more than 500 individual components, of which 167 zinc, 80 plastic and 32 etched parts held together with 225 screws, pins and tools. The vehicle platforms and the loading ramps for the upper and lower levels are made of high-quality metal and also feature the characteristic hole-structure of the original. All components of the original vehicle which can be moved, can also be used accordingly on the scale model. Protected by movable flaps, even the operating levers for the ramps and on the central axle are true-to-detail.
The Actros tractor unit existed in 1:18 scale as a “Hannover IAA 2018” special model, called Edition 1. It has now been further-developed and the colour combination in silver/black is adopted to match the appearance of the new Actros facelift. The new Actros can be recognized immediately by its unique characteristic MirrorCams. This aerodynamically optimized camera mirror system replaces the large side mirrors that are commonly known from large commercial vehicles. 59 zinc, 225 plastic and 10 etched components. 154 screws, pins and tools are installed on the Actros model vehicle which helps it remain true to the original CAD plans. Especially impressive is the tippable cab of the Actros tractor which allows for the engine to be closely inspected. The driver and co-driver's doors, as well as service flap, can all be opened. Each and every little detail from the original vehicle can be found in the scaled-down variant – including the warning notices that some grids cannot be used as a step. A particular highlight is Mercedes stars in the radiator grille and the interior, both of which light up individually. The cab itself is true to the original and features a high-quality equipment level, not to mention digital displays for Mirror Cam which even display a realistic view to the rear.
And to ensure your Actros car transporter has an ample load, there's an array of different Mercedes-Benz models also available in 1:18 scale: the new Mercedes-Benz GLE in iridium silver or brilliant blue, the Mercedes-Benz A-Class in designo mountain grey magno or digital white, the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 4MATIC in designo graphite grey magno or brilliant blue, the Mercedes-Benz X-Class in Bering white or Kabara black, the Mercedes-Benz V-Class in cavansite blue or mountain crystal white, the Mercedes-AMG E 63 S 4MATIC in designo night black magno, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class in emerald green or designo platinum magno, the Mercedes-Benz 450 SEL 6.9 (W 116) in Milan brown, the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class (Pagoda W 113) in horizon blue, the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL in black and the Mercedes-Benz 300 (W 186) in tobacco brown. Just to name a few.
The Actros tractor unit and semitrailer car transporter are available together in a complete set as well as individually. With the help of a conversion set, the semitrailer can even fit to the older Actros model. The afore-mentioned models and that of the Actros car transporter are immediately available from Mercedes-Benz partners or online at http://shop.mercedes-benz.com.

Via and LA Metro Launch Pilot Program to Evolve Public Transit in Los Angeles

Published January 28, 2019 1:30 pm, Via NYC
Via and LA Metro Launch Pilot Program to Evolve Public Transit in Los Angeles
Via’s shared ride technology will provide first-and-last mile solutions for three key LA areas

Via, the world’s leading developer of on-demand shared transit solutions, and the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro), launch today a pilot program that provides first-and-last mile solutions for public transportation in Los Angeles County. The service utilizes Via’s sophisticated algorithm to dynamically route shared vehicles to-and-from three busy Metro stations– Compton (Artesia), El Monte and North Hollywood. The value of the year-long pilot between Via and Metro is $2.5M, which is funded in part by a $1.35M grant from the Federal Transit Administration.

“Via’s technology is redefining mobility across the globe, and we are thrilled to partner with LA Metro, an innovation-forward agency, to provide residents with a convenient, affordable, and congestion-reducing dynamic transportation alternative,” said Daniel Ramot, CEO and co-founder of Via. “Via’s powerful passenger matching and vehicle routing algorithm is the solution to solving the first-and-last mile challenge, seamlessly integrating into the existing public transit infrastructure to connect residents to transit hubs in their communities.”

“This innovative pilot program will give riders another glimpse into LA’s comprehensive future transportation system. Many Metro users face a challenge getting from home to station and vice versa,” said L.A. County Supervisor and Metro Board Chair Sheila Kuehl. “They need a quick, easy, and inexpensive door-to-door solution and this new pilot is one to consider.”

How it works:

Using the Via app, or a dedicated phone line for users without access to a smartphone, passengers in the three pilot zones will select their pickup and drop-off locations and confirm their ride. All trips must start or end at the Metro station in the zone. Via’s smart algorithm enables multiple riders to seamlessly share a single vehicle by directing passengers to a nearby corner – a virtual bus stop – allowing for quick and efficient shared trips without lengthy detours that take riders out of their way. This enables Via’s system to transport a high volume of passengers while using a fraction of the number of vehicles utilized by taxis or on-demand car services. A standard trip costs just $1.75 for riders with a TAP card. LIFE participants– Metro’s low-income fare subsidy program– will ride for free. Those who do not provide a TAP number during account registration will ride for $3.75.

Metro designed the pilot to explore how dynamic, on-demand transportation technology can solve a range of mobility challenges. The main goal of the pilot is to extend the benefits of traditional on-demand services to a wider audience by making the service affordable, equitable and accessible. Via accepts by credit, debit or pre-paid cards for unbanked riders. Rides can be booked through Via’s app or call center for riders without smartphones, also providing translation services for non-English speakers. Passengers with additional mobility needs will be able to request an accessible vehicle.

The partnership with Metro follows on the heels of several new deployments of Via’s technology around the world. From Singapore, where Via recently launched a dynamic, on-demand public bus service in partnership with the Land Transportation Authority (LTA) to Arlington, TX where the city replaced its fixed bus line with a fleet of Via’s vehicles, Via now powers on-demand mobility in more than 30 markets around the globe.

“Our goal at Metro, as part of our Vision 2028 plan, is to provide high-quality mobility options for all riders, regardless of socioeconomic status or disability,” said Metro CEO Phillip A. Washington. “This is an exciting partnership and we believe Mobility on Demand will offer a truly innovative, affordable and accessible service to L.A. County to better serve Metro riders’ first/last-mile needs.”

About Via:

Via is re-engineering public transit, from a regulated system of rigid routes and schedules to a fully dynamic, on-demand network. Via’s mobile app connects multiple passengers who are headed the same way, allowing riders to seamlessly share a premium vehicle. First launched in New York City in September 2013, the Via platform currently operates in the United States, and in Europe through its joint venture with Mercedes-Benz Vans, ViaVan. Via’s technology is also deployed worldwide through partner projects with public transportation agencies, private transit operators, taxi fleets, private companies, and universities, seamlessly integrating with public transit infrastructure to provide the most cutting edge on-demand mobility innovation.

About LA Metro:

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) is unique among the nation’s transportation agencies. Created in 1993, Metro is a multimodal transportation agency that transports about 1.3 million passengers daily on a fleet of 2,200 clean air buses and six rail lines. The agency also oversees bus, rail, highway and other mobility-related building projects and leads transportation planning and programming for Los Angeles County.
