It seems like everyone wants a Tesla Cybertruck. Whoever said there was no demand for this truck is completely clueless. I have seen several tweets from people saying they are getting one or have pre-ordered one. I even plan to reserve one once some personal issues are out of the way (divorce). However, seeing many people I interact with daily — such as Viv, Michell, Vincent, and Sofiaan — share their screenshots and excitement about purchasing the Cybertruck almost made me give in and order it now.
As of yesterday, according to Elon Musk, there have been 200,000 orders of the Tesla Cybertruck. These numbers are going to grow as more and more people talk about it and watch the videos.
Perhaps unveiling a new truck, bringing it on stage, and beating it up was a very smart thing to do. I do think it was hilarious they broke the windows. Actually, the windows didn’t break, they just cracked really badly. In my experience, dropping something as hard as a quartz crystal can shatter glass. Seeing steel balls being thrown at the glass and it not shattering was really unreal. It would be something cool to see in the next Fast and Furious movie, for sure. I bet they would have fun wrecking the Cybertruck.
The demand for Tesla’s new Cybertruck is not only high, but I think it may have broken the internet. People are still talking about it, and even Safelite Autoglass is using it to promote their product. It’s actually pretty funny and just shows why Tesla doesn’t need to advertise. Simply drive up, break some glass, and the internet does it for you.
[Editor’s note: For the record, I have a small glass chip on my Model 3 glass roof — from a rock flying at it on the Interstate — and Safelight told me they don’t deal with Tesla glass roofs. 😛 Repair has to be done at Tesla and reimbursed. 😐 ]
The funny thing is the claims that no one wants a Cybertruck. There is absolutely no demand, just like Little Tesla doesn’t want to attack my toes or anything else that moves. (Little Tesla is a kitten, by the way, and kittens love toes and anything else that moves). Since there is zero demand for Tesla’s hot new Cybertruck, I am going to show you several nonexistent tweets by people who want and pre-ordered a Tesla Cybertruck. There were also some funny tweets in there. Of course, this is a tiny subset of the 200,000 pre-orders.
One thing for sure is that everyone is talking about Tesla’s Cybertruck, and since the holiday season is pretty much here, I can already guess as to what people will be talking about at the Thanksgiving table and what people are getting for Christmas in a couple of years. Who needs to pay for advertising when you can break the internet? With that in mind, the demand for Tesla is definitely there. I can’t wait to see a bunch of Cybertrucks on the roads in the next few years.

Tesla Centers Are Taking Over China

Tesla Centers seem to be taking over China, or will be soon enough. Tesla is unstoppable in China and is converting some of its 48 showrooms into “one-stop shops” that will be known as “Tesla Centers.” These Tesla Centers will serve as warehouses for deliveries, support locations for maintenance, as well as service centers and charging stations.
In fact, CleanTechnica has already written about these Tesla Experience Centers, which also provide a learning place for citizens in China to learn about Tesla.
Tesla plans to increase its number of service centers in China from 29 to 63, and the number of its fast-charging stations from 39 to 362 units. It’s also increased the charging capacity of the Model 3 with its latest software update.
Right now, Tesla operates the majority of its service centers in China’s coastal areas and major provincial capitals, but more are planned in Urumqi, Kumming, and Harbin. Wang Hao of Tesla China told Reuters, “The expansion of the service network is very important to boost customer confidence,” and also mentioned that it would build more charging stations in China at a faster pace, which makes sense given how fast Tesla has been moving in China.
In fact, the sooner Tesla starts building up its service centers and charging stations, the better, because Tesla is planning to make 3,000 vehicles a week soon in China, so it stands to reason that Tesla needs to have a more robust charging infrastructure set up for this new wave of vehicle sales.
Tesla has already started producing its Made-In-China Model 3 vehicles, which, as you can gather from the photos above, include Tesla badges written in Chinese characters. The cars also have two plug-in ports, whereas the ones made in the US have only one. Perhaps this is to comply with government standards.
According to The Global Times, Tesla will try to produce 17,400 Made-In-China Model 3 cars before 2019 is over. It may seem ambitious and even impossible for some who doubt Tesla, but remember the Gigafactory was built well ahead of schedule. This gives Tesla more time to make more vehicles.
Caixin Global reported a few days ago that not only did the Chinese Model 3s go on sale, but also the car “will debut at the 17th Guangzhou International Automobile Exhibition,” which kicked off Friday. Buyers were able to place an order by visiting Tesla’s Chinese website or visiting one of its showrooms. The Made-In-China Model 3s have 460 kilometers of range on a single charge. Also, Caixin Global reports that Tesla has deployed some 2,000 Superchargers across China.
I think it’s safe to say that Tesla is already doing well in China. According to a tweet from Jay in Shanghai, Gigafactory 3 is operating 24/7. Although, we don’t know for sure what the shifts are or how many hours the employees work per shift. Of course, speculation abounds.
Tesla is ready for China and there is no question that China is ready for Tesla. However, having Tesla Centers to help with deliveries and service will definitely help speed things up and make customers happier, I think. Seeing Tesla China grow so rapidly from its baby steps last year into having a fully functioning factory just shows us that Tesla is, despite what critics believe (or claim to believe), doing well.

I had this article in drafts before Frugal Moogal wrote a piece similarly trying to address “controversy” around the $100 refundable preorder cost for a Tesla Cybertruck and the news of 200,000 preorders. However, I have slightly different framing — despite seemingly agreeing on the same two core points — so I feel compelled to still put this piece out there.
Most importantly, I think people on both sides are putting too much in their opinions of what the figures mean — or at least it reads like that. I don’t often end up the “moderate” who sticks to the middle of an issue, but I think that’s really the place to be on this one.
Take Preorder Numbers with a Grain of Salt
The first thing to emphasize is that the $100 preorders are definitely not reservations, orders, purchases, or even firm commitments that you want the Cybertruck. I’ve heard from someone who put down a reservation with only a “20% chance” of buying it, and someone else with only a “10% chance.” I’m sure there are many others who put down a reservation with an expectation that there’s less than a 50% chance they’ll get the truck. Why? Because:
it’s only $100
it’s refundable
it locks in the current Full Self Driving price.
On the other hand, I’ve seen repeatedly (so many times) that people are saying the Cybertruck is growing on them, and it has certainly grown on me for several reasons, mostly practical ones.
Nonetheless, I think the preorder numbers should be something that we all take a pure grain of salt. I don’t think there should really be any extrapolation here in terms of expected initial orders or annual sales.
… But They Mean Something!
Despite what I just wrote, preorders do mean something. At the very least, they mean that a ton of people are interested in the Cybertruck. You may not be committing anything with a refundable $100 deposit, but you’re showing some level of interest in the vehicle. I don’t presume there are many people who put down $100 despite having no interest in the vehicle or no possibility of getting it. Why would you do that?
And even considering low interest on average, 200,000 preorders show a lot of interest in this vehicle. That alone shuts down the common argument that no one wants this vehicle. That shuts down the argument that it’s “too hideous” or “too unusual.” It is appealing to hundreds of thousands of people.
In fact, it’s strikingly different visuals has probably kept people from preordering who may well get the vehicle. I haven’t preordered, but in the past couple of days I’ve thought about a couple of very serious reasons why I’m attracted to the vehicle. (No, it’s not because it’s such a manly man-vehicle … I think.)
As another anecdote, my much younger sister who lives in NYC, who doesn’t bring up Tesla much with me, asked me, “So what’s the word on this new truck? Should I get one?” I was quite surprised by that. She doesn’t even have a license! As a followup, she wrote, “I honestly like the aesthetic. It’s like a bat-SUV.” She fits quite squarely in the population Frugal Moogal described here, which may end up being the truck’s #1 demographic. I doubt many of those people put down a $100 preorder even though seem to love the truck. It’s not really how that culture rolls, from my experience.
Anyway, getting back on track, while I wouldn’t make any forecasts based on the preorder number, I do think it shows a strong level of public interest in the vehicle. Combine that with the chatter I’ve seen online about it, the fact that I think the insanely wild Cybertrukk needs some time to grow on people, and the passion with which I’ve seen people from all different groups (with different types of vehicles) expressing their love for the official vehicle of Mars, and I increasingly think this thing is going to be a real hit. But we’ll see. We have ~2 years for conjecture and speculation.
