The litigation could cost the carmakers at least £6 billion (7.1 billion euros), plaintiffs’ lawyers said. Mercedes-Benz – which faces around 300,000 lawsuits – said in a statement: “We continue to believe that the lawsuits against Mercedes-Benz are unfounded.” The Stuttgart car manufacturer will vigorously defend itself using the necessary legal means. A Ford spokesman said: “We see no basis for these claims and strongly oppose them. Our vehicles and engines meet all applicable emissions regulations.” The “Dieselgate” scandal that began at Volkswagen in 2015 has already cost the Wolfsburg-based car manufacturer more than 32 billion euros in conversions, fines and legal costs.
