According to the Reuters news agency, in China in July, for the first time, more than half of new registrations – exactly 50.7 percent – had a battery-electric drive or a plug-in drive. Higher purchase premiums and a relaxation of the strict registration restrictions in large cities would have contributed to this. Europe is a long way from that: in September, the rate of these drive types in the EU remained at 24.1 percent. According to the European Auto Industry Association, ACEA, the share of battery-electric cars (BEVs) in new registrations rose to 17.3 percent (previous year: 14.8 percent), while the share of plug-in cars rose to 6.8 percent declined (previous year: 8.2 percent). This means that the BEV registration rate in September was slightly higher than in the statistics for the nine months from January to September 2024. This still shows an average BEV rate of 13.1 percent, compared to 14 percent in the previous year. The development of the registration numbers of BEV is heavily dependent on funding programs from individual countries or on regulations against combustion engines. There are therefore big differences between the EU countries in the nine-month statistics for registrations from January to September: Germany is ahead with a quarter of the EU’s total BEV registrations, but BEVs there are so strong at 28.6 percent compared to the previous year lost that Germany’s negative values dominate the EU statistics. The European neighbor could soon overtake Great Britain. Small northern European countries from Belgium to Denmark are in third to sixth place. In contrast, the Eastern European auto nations Czech Republic (7225 BEV registrations in nine months) and Hungary (6530) come in 16th and 17th place behind Luxembourg, while Slovakia (1729) comes in 21st place behind Malta. The breakdown of the statistics by car company shows that in the The Volkswagen Group’s EU market grew by 0.6 percent to 7.99 million cars in nine months, primarily thanks to Skoda, Seat and Cupra. Stellantis lost 6 percent in nine months, mainly due to Opel (minus 7.8 percent), Fiat (minus 13.4) and Alfa Romeo (minus 10.3). The drama of the Stellantis crash can be seen in the monthly figures for September – 26 percent below the previous year’s figure. Opel lost 22 percent year-on-year in September, the Stellantis brands Citroen and Fiat lost more than 45 percent. The German premium manufacturers BMW and Mercedes developed very differently: The Mercedes brand suffered a decline in new registrations of 1 in the first nine months of 2024 .7 percent and lost some market share to 5 percent. The rival brand BMW, on the other hand, grew by 7 percent in the same period and increased its market share in the EU to 5.7 percent. More on the subject Tesla lost 7.6 percent in new registrations in the first nine months of 2024 compared to the previous year, and its market share shrank to 2 .4 percent. As is often the case with Tesla, an interim spurt was attempted in September to improve the quarterly figures. This means that for the month of September 2024 alone, the number of new registrations increased by 31.2 percent to 31,555, and the market share increased to 3.9 percent. Of China’s car manufacturers with purely Chinese production, only SAIC Motor can be found in the statistics, with a market share for the first nine months of 2024 of 1.9 percent.
