German FAZ: German car manufacturers are probably working on customs deal with USA009406

According to insiders, the German carmakers BMW, Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz negotiate with the US Ministry of Trade about possible customs reservations. It was about a mechanism in which imports would be offset against exports from the USA, three people familiar with the process of the Reuters news agency said. It is about easier in customs in return for billions of investments in the United States. First, the “Handelsblatt” had reported on the negotiations in which an agreement would be sought until the beginning of July. What do BMW and Mercedes say? BMW said that the company has always been in close dialogue with various stakeholders in the USA. This also included political representatives on different levels. The carmaker did not comment on the ongoing negotiation. Mercedes-Benz did not want to comment either. CEO Ola Källenius had already stated at the end of April to be in an interview with the US government about a possible expansion of the US plant in Tuscaloosa and announced the production of another SUV model there. Volkswagen could add investments to his work in Chattanooga or at the factory for the new Scout in South Carolina.
