The German car industry is a large part of the identity and the national economy. Generations of families have worked there. When that is lost, you are afraid. Why are the Chinese so good now? It’s about the mentality. They say many are afraid. Change your perspective! Twenty years ago, China was in a much weaker position. We could have been desperate back then. Many were. They thought: There is no chance of us catching up with the developed economies. And compared to Mercedes, BMW, Volkswagen, Bosch and Schaeffler. But ultimately the Germans and the Chinese are pretty similar: we’re good at math and engineering and like building things rather than trading.
